Insomniac Events’ plans to host EDC New York at the infamous grounds of the ’94 Woodstock festival have now been cancelled by local government, as supervisor Kelly Myers released a statement, citing insufficient resources as the cause of venue change. During a town hall meeting on Wednesday, Myers mentioned that the 75,000 odd attending event would be far beyond the scope of local infrastructure, also stating that fire and ambulances did not feel they could swiftly and safely provide aid in case of any emergencies.
The owners of Winston Farms, the Schaller family also aren’t too comfy hosting an EDM festival on their property. It seems like the local government as well as the Schaller family saw eye to eye, regarding a bunch of aspects regarding an event of this magnitude. With North American festivals already coming under the knife, for all the tragedies occurring, such a decision might not be so bad after all. At the end of the day, safety and health of all attendees should be primary priority, period.
Update: Insomniac Events has reached out to us to elaborate on the news. As they have explained, the event was postponed indefinitely due to the hesitance of the Winston Farm property owners, rather than town safety concerns. It has been learned that they will continue to forge ahead with plans for events in NY next year.
The official statement from Jennifer Forkish, Insomniac’s vice president of communications and public affairs reads:
“The proposal was denied by the Schaller family, the owners of Winston Farms, who did not feel comfortable hosting a dance music festival on their site. Local officials often have questions over any type of mass gathering and this was no different. However, the proposal was nixed due to a lack of venue, not due to health and safety concerns.”
