Prototype Remaster May Be on the Way After New Credits Were Quietly Added to the Steam Version

Speculation Rises Around Potential Revival of “Prototype”

Enthusiasts of the 2009 video game “Prototype” believe they have found evidence suggesting the game might be revived.

Despite lying dormant on Steam for the past 16 years since its release, observant fans have noticed a series of updates being made to the game’s backend on SteamDB. Additionally, a datamining activity has unveiled an intriguing update to the game’s credits section, where the name of the remaster studio Iron Galaxy and a mention of Ubisoft Connect have been added.

Discoveries from a Veteran Modder

A prominent modder of the game shared on the game’s subreddit that the recent updates were quite revealing. “In the latest update for ‘Prototype 1,’ they’ve incorporated some test maps and several new names in the credits. This could possibly mean that a remaster might be underway,” said StanleyMitchel.

Further discussion was sparked by a link to two versions of the game’s credit roll, showing significant changes. These changes include the formation of a new “downloadable content” team, a team specific to the “Ubisoft Connect Version,” “Activision Localization,” “Demonware,” and notably, “Iron Galaxy Studios.” In total, there were 753 modifications made to the original credits.

New Insights and Potential Remaster Confirmation

“One of the studios now listed in the credits was also involved in the Spyro remasters,” noted Nixson on Discord. “This confirms it. They are definitely working on remastering the games, probably using the same or a similar engine like what was used for ‘Oblivion.’ There are many new names, mostly from other Activision studios,” they continued. “It’s beginning to look like the rumors about a new ‘Prototype’ project might actually be true.”

The peculiar reference to Ubisoft Connect could be linked to the recent corporate developments where Microsoft, upon acquiring Activision in a landmark $68.7 billion deal in 2023, agreed to transfer the cloud gaming rights of Activision to Ubisoft. Although unconfirmed, it’s conceivable that “Prototype” could be included in Ubisoft’s subscription services in the future.

Reflecting on “Prototype”

“Prototype” allows players to immerse themselves in the role of Alex Mercer, a dark, genetically altered shapeshifter with amnesia, striving to unravel the secrets of his existence while rampaging through New York City. The game was well received at its initial release in 2009, praised for its innovative features but criticized for lacking the finer details that typically make a game memorable and impactful.

As fans and gamers watch closely, the unfolding developments could potentially lead to the resurgence of a game that many enjoyed but felt lacked polish. The inclusion of new teams and studios in the recent updates only fuels the anticipation and hope among the gaming community for a revamped and improved version of “Prototype.”
