Vantage Studios Takes the Helm of Ubisoft’s Top Franchises
Ubisoft has recently transitioned the management of its three premier franchises—Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six—to Vantage Studios. This new division has been established as a separate entity, with Ubisoft holding the majority stake and Chinese conglomerate Tencent owning 25%.
Vantage Studios, hailed as Ubisoft’s inaugural ‘Creative House,’ has been granted full creative and operational autonomy over these franchises. This directive has been communicated to employees at Ubisoft’s various studios located in MontrĂ©al, Quebec, Sherbrooke, Saguenay, Barcelona, and Sofia.
The leadership of Vantage Studios will be a joint effort by Christophe Derennes and Charlie Guillemot as co-CEOs. This strategic move is unfolding just as Ubisoft is about to finalize a significant transaction with Tencent, valued at approximately €1.16 billion (~$1.25 billion).
Challenges and Expectations Facing Ubisoft
In recent years, Ubisoft has faced significant challenges. Despite the successful release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the company has endured several setbacks including high-profile flops, layoffs, studio closures, and game cancellations. These issues have culminated in substantial pressure on Ubisoft, particularly after its share price plummeted to an all-time low.
Currently, the Assassin’s Creed series continues to generate buzz with new content releases. The first expansion for Assassin’s Creed Shadows was launched last month, and there’s upcoming DLC for Assassin’s Creed Mirage, financially backed by Saudi Arabia. Additionally, there are strong indications that a remake of the beloved Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag is on the horizon, though no official announcement has been made yet.
While Ubisoft remains committed to supporting Rainbow Six Siege, details about other forthcoming projects are sparse. However, reports suggest that a major new installment in the Far Cry series has been under development for a while.
This restructuring and new strategic direction under Vantage Studios mark an important phase for Ubisoft as it aims to rejuvenate its portfolio and restore its market position amidst ongoing challenges and high expectations.
