Captain America Actor Anthony Mackie Comments On State Of Hollywood: "There's A Shortage Of Fresh And New Ideas"

Anthony Mackie Dives Back into Action in “Twisted Metal” Season 2

Anthony Mackie reprises his role in the adrenaline-pumping world of vehicular warfare in the second season of “Twisted Metal,” a series based on the popular Sony video game franchise. The show is set to launch this week on the streaming platform Peacock. Playing the character John Doe, Mackie brings a distinctive viewpoint to the adaptation of video games, highlighting a prevalent issue in Hollywood: the scarcity of original content, which pushes studios to bank on well-known intellectual properties (IPs) to ensure financial success.

“To be frank, Hollywood is experiencing a drought of innovative and original ideas,” Mackie shared with GameSpot during a visit to the set of “Twisted Metal” before the launch of its second season. “There’s a reluctance among many to take risks and embrace creativity. Instead, there’s a heavy reliance on established IPs because they come with guaranteed audiences,” he explained.

Mackie continued, “In this industry, we’re not looking to test unproven concepts. We prefer to work with something that has a pre-existing fan base, so if things don’t pan out, we have a justification to fall back on, and avoid repercussions from higher-ups, like getting fired by Disney, for instance. It’s just the direction the industry has moved towards.”

This strategy appears to be effective, as demonstrated by some recent successes. “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” has grossed $1.3 billion, making it the second highest-grossing film worldwide in 2023. Similarly, “A Minecraft Movie” has earned over $950 million this year. On television, HBO’s “The Last of Us” has received critical acclaim and garnered a large viewership, leading to 16 new Emmy nominations. Numerous other video game adaptations are currently underway across both film and television mediums.

At 46, Mackie is widely recognized for his significant roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starting with his portrayal of Sam Wilson / Falcon and later as Captain America in “Captain America: Brave New World,” which debuted earlier this year. He first appeared in the film industry with the 2002 movie “8 Mile” and has since been known for his roles in “The Hurt Locker” and as MLK Jr. in “All the Way.”

“Twisted Metal” Season 2 is scheduled to premiere on July 31 on Peacock.

Sony Pictures Television covered GameSpot’s travel and accommodations to Toronto for an exclusive preview of the “Twisted Metal” Season 2 set, along with interviews with the cast and crew.
