Will Reeve on His ‘Superman’ Cameo, Honoring His Late Dad Christopher and Why the Family Embraces Every New Man of Steel: ‘We’re Rooting for Everybody to Succeed’

Will Reeve was traveling from New York City to Cleveland to shoot his cameo in James Gunn’s “Superman” when he humorously suggested that his late father, Christopher Reeve—who famously portrayed Superman on the big screen—might have given him a heavenly nod. “My flight was slightly delayed, so make of that what you will,” Reeve joked during his appearance on the red carpet at the film’s premiere at Hollywood’s TCL Chinese Theatre.

A Tribute to His Parents

Reeve elaborated on his decision to participate in the film, viewing it as a way to honor his parents. “I strive to live my life independently, make my own choices, and I believe that making the right choices honors my parents. Participating in this film felt like the right choice in that regard,” he said.

Role in the Film and Family Support

Reeve, who works as a correspondent for ABC News, has a brief appearance in “Superman” as a journalist. “My family thought it was incredibly cool. They wanted to come along, but it was a Wednesday, and they had work commitments,” Reeve shared. He emphasized that while his father played the role memorably, the family doesn’t see themselves as gatekeepers of the Superman legacy. “We support everyone who takes on the role; we hope they all succeed and soar,” he added.

No Acting Ambitions

When asked if he’s been bitten by the acting bug, Reeve responded humorously, “Once you see it, you’ll realize I shouldn’t have the acting bug. I love my job at ABC News—it’s incredibly important to me. But if anyone needs a cameo, I’m a SAG member, so I’m available.”

Behind the Scenes at the Premiere

Production designer Beth Mickle shared a memorable moment from the set involving David Corenswet, who plays Superman. “I was alone in the Fortress of Solitude when I turned around to see David ascending the steps in his long red cape. He was very gracious, complimented the set, and I had the honor of giving Superman a tour of his own fortress,” Mickle recounted.

She also mentioned guiding Shaquille O’Neal around the set during his visit to film an NBA promo with Corenswet and James Gunn. “We promised Shaq an 18-foot crystal, which we still need to deliver. Shaq, I owe you that giant crystal,” she joked.

Casting Insights and Transformations

Former Victoria’s Secret model Sara Sampaio, who plays Lex Luthor’s influencer girlfriend Eve Teschmacher, recalled her audition. “James asked everyone to take a selfie at the end of their audition. I definitely knew how to do that!” she laughed. Sampaio also commented on Nicholas Hoult’s recent switch to blonde hair, humorously suggesting it could be a plot point in a future film.

Transforming into Metamorpho was a lengthy process for Anthony Carrigan, requiring over five hours of makeup and costume each day. “It’s a very practical costume, but some CGI is needed for action sequences,” he explained.

First-Time Experiences and Celebrity Comments

Noah Wyle expressed his excitement about attending a major premiere at the Chinese Theatre, a first for him. “It’s a Warner Bros. movie, and I’m eager to see what James Gunn and Peter Safran have done with it. Superman was everyone’s first superhero, and I grew up with those old George Reeves reruns,” Wyle shared.

Pruitt Taylor Vince, who plays Clark Kent’s adoptive father, humorously admitted to not knowing who James Gunn was initially. “When I heard about the role, I asked my friends, ‘Who’s James Gunn?’ and they were shocked. No offense, James, that’s on me,” Vince said with a smile.

Overall, the excitement and anecdotes from the “Superman” movie premiere illuminated the enduring appeal and collaborative spirit behind the superhero’s latest cinematic incarnation, now showing in theaters.
