“The Superman” movie soared to 13 million views on HBO Max within its first 10 days, making it the platform’s most successful 10-day opening for any movie since the debut of “Barbie” in 2023.
Directed by James Gunn with David Corenswet in the role of Superman, this DC Studios production premiered on HBO Max on September 19. Warner Bros. Discovery reported that other Superman-related films also experienced increased viewership around the time this new movie was released. Specifically, from September 15 to 21, “Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story” witnessed a 670% surge in views from the previous week. Similarly, “Superman: The Movie” saw a 155% increase, “Superman Returns” rose by 120%, and “Man of Steel” saw a 40% boost during the same period.
Prior to its streaming release, “Superman” was showcased in cinemas in July and quickly became a box office hit, amassing over $600 million against a production budget of $225 million. It also received favorable reviews from critics, securing an 83% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Owen Gleiberman, the lead film critic for The Bangin Beats, praised the film: “Watching ‘Superman,’ we are captivated by the depth of the conflicts and are pulled deeply into them,” he commented. “Gunn has masterfully crafted a complex and emotionally engaging superhero narrative that is both compelling and occasionally overwhelming.”
