In a recent video discussion with People magazine, David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan, stars of the latest “Superman” film directed by James Gunn, shared their experiences of surprising each other during shoots. Brosnahan praised Corenswet, describing him as “an incredibly bold performer” who consistently explored “various aspects of his role.”
Corenswet then shared an anecdote from their time on set, chuckling as he recounted how Brosnahan’s performance in one scene provoked him to exclaim, “Oh fuck you,” unexpectedly. “It was a complete surprise to everyone, including myself,” he admitted. “She really threw me for a loop and tapped into some genuine emotions. My response was purely in the heat of the moment, staying true to my character.”
This wasn’t an isolated incident of colorful language on the “Superman” set. In a feature for GQ, Gunn mentioned that he often playfully chided Corenswet whenever he felt overwhelmed by his questions.

Gunn explained, “Usually, David’s inquiries are insightful, and they enhance both his performance and the film. But occasionally, he’ll ask just one too many, and I’ll have to tell him, ‘David, enough already.’ What’s great is that David understands this about himself and knows my limits. When I tell him to just stop and give it a rest, he doesn’t take it personally at all.”
“Our relationship is quite special in this regard,” Gunn continued. “Typically, I tread lightly with actors because they often wear their hearts on their sleeves. But David isn’t overly sensitive in that way.”
In Gunn’s film, Corenswet takes on the iconic role of Superman, with Brosnahan portraying Lois Lane. The duo kept mum about the particular scene that prompted Corenswet’s unscripted outburst, though it likely occurred during a tense interview scene between Lois and Superman, which was also part of their audition script and has been lauded as a standout moment in the final film.
“Superman” is currently showing in theaters across the country under the Warner Bros. banner. For more insights, view the full interview with Corenswet and Brosnahan in the People magazine video below.
