James Gunn Consults Zack Snyder on Superman’s Costume Design
James Gunn, in a recent interview with Fandango, disclosed that he sought advice from Zack Snyder about whether to include the iconic red trunks in the new Superman outfit. Snyder, who directed Henry Cavill in “Man of Steel,” a film noted for its trunk-less Superman costume, also managed subsequent films featuring Cavill such as “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” (2016) and “Justice League” (2017). With Gunn at the helm of the upcoming reboot of the DC Comics superhero, the addition of red trunks has been a hot topic among fans, especially after images of David Corenswet dressed as Superman surfaced online.
Gunn shared, “A major decision point was about the costume’s trunks. I consulted Zack Snyder who told me he experimented with countless variations including trunks but ultimately couldn’t settle on including them. I found myself in a similar position. Although I personally liked the trunks because that’s the Superman I remember from my childhood, it just didn’t work out in the end.”
Gunn had earlier explained that it was Corenswet who ultimately influenced the decision to keep the trunks in the redesign. He remarked, “During fittings and screen tests, both with and without trunks, David made a compelling point that Superman, despite being an alien with formidable powers, aims to not intimidate children. He wants to be approachable and embody hope and positivity, much like a professional wrestler’s attire, which is designed to be bold yet non-threatening.” This rationale resonated with Gunn, helping him finalize the costume design.
The director also noted the inherent absurdity of trying to make Superman appear overly serious. He emphasized, “It’s somewhat ludicrous to force a serious demeanor on Superman. He is, after all, a superhero – the original one clad in bright colors. That’s his essence.”
New Beginnings at DC Studios
As the new co-chief of DC Studios, alongside Peter Safran, Gunn is at the forefront of launching a revamped DC Universe, beginning with the “Superman” film. This initiative marks a departure from the previous universe initiated by Snyder, which saw its share of box office underperformances, including “The Flash.” Gunn, after assuming leadership at the studio, communicated via X (formerly Twitter) that he had reached out to Snyder, ensuring there were no unresolved issues between them.
