Superman Director James Gunn Reveals New Up Close Image of Ultraman — but Who’s Under the Mask?

The anticipation for the upcoming Superman film is mounting, especially with several trailers and promotional visuals already released, giving fans insight into what to expect and the array of characters it will feature.

The Enigmatic Ultraman

Amidst the familiar faces, one character has consistently piqued curiosity since his first appearance in the initial Superman trailer: Ultraman. This version of Ultraman, brought to life by writer and director James Gunn, offers a stark contrast to the notorious character known from the DC comics. Traditionally depicted as an evil, alternate-universe version of Superman, Ultraman in the comics shares a striking resemblance to the hero, albeit with a darker persona.

In Gunn’s rendition for the film, Ultraman doesn’t bear any physical resemblance to Superman. Instead, he sports a suit that leans more towards military attire, complete with a mask, though he retains the iconic large ‘U’ emblem on his chest as prominently displayed in the trailers. Despite the different appearance, Ultraman’s abilities seem to mirror those of Superman, as suggested by the footage released so far.

A Closer Look at Ultraman

Recently, James Gunn unveiled a new image of Ultraman, offering fans a detailed look at the character’s distinctive mask and dusty goggles. Yet, the identity of the actor beneath the mask remains undisclosed, sparking widespread speculation and anticipation.

This new visual has led to discussions comparing Ultraman’s appearance to that of Doomsday, especially noting similarities in the suit and goggles. Doomsday, known for his monstrosity in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, originally appeared more humanoid in his debut on the cover of Superman: The Man of Steel #18 in December 1992.

The full-body coverage of Ultraman in the film suggests that his identity is intentionally being kept a secret. This strategy ensures that the reveal will be a significant moment for audiences when they see the movie.

The Origins and Role of Ultraman

James Gunn has hinted at the origins of this iteration of Ultraman, though he has remained vague with the details. In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, when asked if Ultraman was a creation of Lex Luthor intended to mimic Superman, Gunn responded affirmatively, describing Ultraman as “sort of Lex’s thug” and noting his considerable power.

The true nature and purpose of Ultraman will be unveiled with the film’s release on July 11.

Addressing Potential Confusion in the Superman Universe

In other news related to the Superman movie, Gunn recently addressed concerns about potential confusion due to the plethora of superheroes and villains in the film’s universe. He reassured that the movie has fewer speaking roles compared to other major films, humorously noting that “Oppenheimer has three times as many speaking roles as we do.”

As the release date approaches, both new and longtime fans of Superman are eager to discover how these characters, especially the mysterious Ultraman, will be portrayed in Gunn’s vision of the Superman universe.
