'There Are Many More Continents to Visit' — The Walking Dead Might Keep Going Another 15 Years as Its Characters Work Their Way Across the Globe

The Walking Dead has proven to be a resilient and enduring series in contemporary television. With numerous seasons and an array of spinoffs, the saga continues to expand. Scott Gimple, the writer and executive producer, believes that the universe of The Walking Dead still has vast potential for further exploration.

During a panel at Mipcom in Cannes, which Variety covered, Gimple speculated on the future of the franchise. He mentioned the new Daryl Dixon spinoff, which tracks the beloved character, played by Norman Reedus, as he ventures into France. “Imagine us still following this journey 15 years from now,” he mused about the series’ longevity.

Gimple sees endless opportunities for narrative development across different geographies. “The globe is full of continents we could explore. Watching how the characters adapt and evolve over time is thrilling,” he shared. He emphasized that new settings provide rich material for creativity, essentially allowing the environment to dictate new story arcs. “These varied locations often end up crafting the narrative for us,” he added.

He even drew parallels between the expansive narrative possibilities in The Walking Dead and the detailed world-building seen in comic book adaptations, such as those in the Marvel and DC universes. “It’s all interconnected and branches out in numerous directions,” Gimple explained. He described the potential for placing familiar characters in entirely new contexts, presenting them with fresh challenges that stimulate character growth and evolution.

Expanding the storyline to include various international settings and cultures would indeed be intriguing. It’s interesting to note how themes of isolation, which are prevalent in zombie-themed media, often mirror the narrative constraints within the genre itself. This was notably captured in the 2002 film 28 Days Later, which portrayed the UK as isolated from the world following a zombie outbreak. Breaking away from this traditional narrative confinement could provide exciting new directions for The Walking Dead.

Since its debut in 2010, The Walking Dead aired 11 seasons and concluded in 2022 after 177 episodes. It has inspired six spinoff series, including The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, which premiered in 2023. This latest series has been renewed for a fourth and final season, set to air next year.
