HBO's TLOU Composer Seemingly Confirms Season 4 In The Works

The second season of HBO’s acclaimed series, The Last of Us, concluded last month, paving the way for a third season that will delve into the character Abby, played by Kaitlyn Dever, and her initial experiences in Seattle. While the release date for the third season remains unannounced, there has been a teasing hint from the show’s composer about a potential fourth season.

During an appearance on The Last of Us: Savage Starlight podcast, as reported by GamesRadar, composer Jake Staley made a cryptic comment suggesting the continuation of the series: “There’ll be at least two more seasons, no question. At least, that’s all I’m gonna say.”

Supporting Staley’s hint, series showrunner Craig Mazin expressed that the envisioned storyline cannot be adequately covered in just three seasons. He anticipates that the third season will need to be extended beyond the length of the second season. Mazin shared with Collider, “There’s no way to complete this narrative in a third season. Hopefully, we’ll earn our keep enough to come back and finish it in a fourth.” Previously, HBO executives have mentioned that The Last of Us is likely to conclude after its fourth season.

The structure of the upcoming seasons appears to be set, with Abby receiving an entire season dedicated to her backstory, bridging the narrative from Season 2. However, the wait for Season 3 could be considerable, as production has not yet commenced.

Long delays between seasons are something the audience of The Last of Us has grown accustomed to. After the first season ended in March 2023, it wasn’t until April 2025 that the second season aired. If this pattern continues, the third season might not premiere until 2027. Meanwhile, fans of the original game series are still awaiting any news of a third installment, even after five years.
