George R.R. Martin has indicated that several new Game of Thrones spinoff projects are currently in the works, including potential sequels. This news comes as HBO recently unveiled a Marvel-like lineup for the continued expansion of the Game of Thrones universe, which includes multiple future seasons of both “House of the Dragon” and “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” set to be released within the next three years.
Aside from these two series, Martin has been actively involved in the development of additional projects that are officially “in development.” These include plans for several series that would follow the events of Game of Thrones’ much-debated finale. “In addition to ‘The Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ and ‘House of the Dragon,’ there are several other Game of Thrones spinoff projects in the pipeline,” Martin revealed during an appearance at an event hosted by Los Siete Reinos. “Most of these are prequels. We have about five or six series in the works, and I am collaborating with other creatives on these. Yes, we are also looking at developing some sequels.”
The two spinoffs currently airing—House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms—are both prequels to Game of Thrones. House of the Dragon is set two hundred years prior to the events of the original series, while A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms takes place roughly a century before the main series.
Martin has previously shared other potential spinoff concepts, such as a show about Aegon the Conqueror, set approximately 300 years before Game of Thrones, a canceled series about the warrior queen Nymeria, who lived 1,000 years earlier, and an abandoned project named 10,000 Ships, which would have centered around a maritime city.
Despite these developments, Martin has been somewhat reticent about any projects set after the conclusion of Game of Thrones—a storyline he has yet to finish in his book series, with two more volumes planned.
Warning! Spoilers for Game of Thrones follow:
The final season of Game of Thrones was marked by significant bloodshed, yet several beloved characters survived, leaving room for possible sequels. Notably, Kit Harington, who played Jon Snow, mentioned past discussions about a potential spinoff centered on his character, although the project was eventually shelved after years of development.
Fans have also expressed interest in the future adventures of Arya Stark, who was last seen setting sail to explore new lands. In December, Martin hinted at a project involving Arya when he recounted a meeting with actress Maisie Williams. “We met with Maisie Williams over pizza and pasta, and discussed something exciting—though I’d rather not give details now to avoid jinxing it. But it could be a lot of fun,” he teased.
However, it’s important to remember that many TV projects described as being “in development” do not always result in a finished product. For example, HBO invested $30 million in filming a pilot for a Game of Thrones prequel starring Naomi Watts, but ultimately decided to scrap the project.
