Box Office: ‘Superman’ Lifts Off With $56.5 Million Opening Day — Second-Biggest of 2025

Warner Bros. and DC Studios’ “Superman” has soared to impressive heights, racking up $56.5 million from Friday and preview showings in 4,135 theaters. This ranks as the second highest debut of the year, slightly trailing behind “A Minecraft Movie” at $57.11 million and surpassing “Lilo & Stitch” which brought in $55.94 million.

Significantly, “Superman” also benefited from special early screenings on Tuesday exclusively for Amazon Prime members, ahead of its regular Thursday night debut.

The highly anticipated reboot, penned and helmed by James Gunn of “Guardians of the Galaxy” fame, had initial mid-week estimates aiming for a $100 million opening. However, some optimistic predictions went as high as $140 million just a day before release. It now appears likely to achieve around $120 million, aided by premium pricing for Imax and other high-end viewing formats.

This marks a strong launch for the latest portrayal of the Man of Steel and continues Warner Bros.’ recent successful streak, which began in April with “A Minecraft Movie.” “Superman” not only carries the weight of its $225 million budget but also shoulders the responsibility of establishing a fresh cinematic universe for DC Comics, potentially setting the stage for a new era of superhero films.

For “Superman” to cement its staying power, it must maintain strong performance against other summer films. Fortunately, it benefits from favorable reviews and high audience approval, receiving an “A-” from CinemaScore.

In this latest iteration, David Corenswet takes on the iconic role, facing adversaries like billionaire Lex Luthor, played by Nicholas Hoult, while also navigating his alter ego Clark Kent’s life with journalist Lois Lane, portrayed by Rachel Brosnahan. The film also features a plethora of other superheroes such as Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), and more.

Meanwhile, Universal’s “Jurassic World Rebirth” secured the second spot, pulling in $11.3 million on Friday, with projections set at $38.7 million for the weekend. This marks a slight improvement over its franchise predecessor’s performance at the same point.

Third place goes to Warner Bros.’ distribution of Apple Studios’ “F1,” a racing thriller starring Brad Pitt, which earned $3.7 million on Friday, reaching a cumulative $126.9 million in North America. Despite its hefty $250 million budget, the film’s strong international earnings highlight Apple’s growing influence in the theatrical market.

“How to Train Your Dragon,” in its fifth week, still hovers in the top five, with a weekend forecast of $7.7 million, bringing its total to $239 million domestically, surpassing its animated predecessor.

Rounding out the top five, Disney and Pixar’s “Elio” added $1.2 million on Friday, reaching a total of $60.9 million. Despite its underwhelming start, the film has shown resilience in subsequent weekends.
