Split Fiction Creator Is Unsure If Movie Will Actually Happen, Teases Next Game

Potential Film Adaptation of Split Fiction: Director Josef Fares Remains Skeptical

Recent buzz suggests that a film adaptation of the game Split Fiction might be in the works, although director Josef Fares is not entirely convinced of its materialization. Fares, well-acquainted with the unpredictability of Hollywood, maintains a cautious stance. “I believe it when I see it, because nothing has happened yet,” Fares conveyed to Variety. He added, “It would be nice if it happened, but again, I believe it when I see it. Sometimes there’s a lot of talk, but nothing happens. So, we will see.”

As of now, no official announcement has been made regarding a Split Fiction movie. According to information obtained by Variety from unnamed sources, Story Kitchen has emerged victorious from a bidding war to secure the rights for the film adaptation. This development implies only the acquisition of rights and doesn’t guarantee that the movie will be produced soon, or at all.

Prior to his career in game development, Fares directed several Swedish films including Zozo (2005), Leo (2007), and Balls (2010). His brother, Fares Fares, is an accomplished actor known for his performances in the Academy Award-winning movie Zero Dark Thirty and the Star Wars installment Rogue One.

Adapting Game to Film: Challenges and Changes

Should the adaptation of Split Fiction to film become a reality, Fares expressed his openness to significant modifications in the storyline to better suit the cinematic format. “I think you have to change the story because in our games, we focus a lot on interactivity, mechanics, and everything, but in movies, it’s a different kind of focus,” he explained. He anticipates that the scriptwriters would need to alter a lot but still retain the core idea, characters, and the unique blend of sci-fi and fantasy elements to craft a compelling movie.

Another game by Hazelight, It Takes Two, was also rumored to be set for a film adaptation involving Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, under the same production company, Story Kitchen, responsible for the successful Sonic the Hedgehog movie series. However, there haven’t been any significant updates on this project.

Future Endeavors and Teasers from Hazelight

In his discussion with Variety, Fares teased the upcoming game from Hazelight Studios, hinting at the thematic continuity that links all their games. Each game is associated with a thematic word; for instance, “friendship” for Split Fiction, “collaboration” for It Takes Two, and “trust” for A Way Out. Fares hinted at a thematic word for the new title but chose to keep it under wraps to avoid spoilers.

Fares confirmed that development is already underway for the next Hazelight game, expressing high confidence in their upcoming project: “Just wait until [you see] what we do next. I know it’s cocky. But that’s how confident we feel in what we’re doing,” he claimed. This new title has big expectations to meet, following Split Fiction’s critical acclaim and commercial success, including a perfect score from GameSpot and over 2 million copies sold.

Exploring Split Fiction: Easter Eggs and References

The game is rich with Easter eggs and references to other media, including nods to popular titles like Elden Ring and Halo, among others, providing an additional layer of enjoyment and connection for fans and players.
