The Excellent D&D Movie's Writers Are Turning Another Game Into A Film

Monopoly Celebrates 90 Years with Anticipated Movie Adaptation

2023 marks the 90th anniversary of Monopoly, a beloved board game known globally. For nearly two decades, Hollywood has endeavored to produce a movie based on the game. Recently, the project has gained traction by engaging the talents of the writers and directors behind Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein are nearing the completion of their agreement to pen the screenplay for the Monopoly film. It’s important to note, though, that their contract does not seem to include the possibility of them directing the movie. Daley and Goldstein have a solid track record, having co-written Horrible Bosses, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Vacation Friends, and directed films like Vacation, Game Night, and the soon-to-be-released Mayday from Apple Studios.

Last year, actress and producer Margot Robbie also came onboard, aligning her production company LuckyChap with Hasbro Entertainment and Lionsgate to work on the Monopoly movie. As of now, the film has not yet secured any actors for its lineup.

Challenges in Bringing Monopoly to the Big Screen

Transforming the game of Monopoly into a narrative film has proven challenging for filmmakers in the past. In 2008, Ridley Scott, famed for directing Alien, was set to direct a Monopoly movie when the rights were held by Universal Pictures. However, after several years, Universal ceased its development on the project, and it was later picked up by Lionsgate. In 2019, there was an attempt to reconfigure the project as a vehicle for comedian Kevin Hart with Tim Story, known for his work on Barbershop and Fantastic Four, set to direct. Unfortunately, this version also failed to proceed.

On a related note, a new version of the Monopoly board game was released earlier this year, featuring new expansion packs. Monopoly has seen several adaptations beyond the board, including video games like Monopoly Go! for mobile devices and a version by Ubisoft for PC and modern gaming consoles.
