New Minecraft Movie Trailer Reveals Its Villain, Free In-Game Jetpack Coming For Some Ticket Buyers

The much-anticipated film adaptation of the popular video game, A Minecraft Movie, is set to hit theaters this April. The latest trailer just dropped, giving fans a deeper glimpse into what to expect from the movie.

In this new trailer, viewers are treated to snippets of the plot and some humorous escapades, including a scene where Jason Momoa’s character has an amusing confrontation with a chicken. For the first time, we catch a glimpse of Jennifer Coolidge’s character and see more comedic antics from Jack Black’s character, Steve. The trailer also introduces the film’s antagonists from the Nether, a hell-like realm populated by dangerous creatures, led by the Piglin chief Malgosha, voiced by Rachel House (known from Moana and Hunt for the Wilderpeople).

The trailer is packed with numerous Minecraft Easter eggs, so fans are encouraged to watch closely and discover all the hidden details.

Tickets for A Minecraft Movie are now available for purchase. In the US, buyers who secure their tickets through Fandango will receive a special in-game jetpack for Minecraft: Bedrock Edition. There are also promotional tie-ins for international audiences, offering similar in-game rewards through local ticket vendors.

Additionally, Mattel has unveiled a new line of toys inspired by A Minecraft Movie, including action figures of Jack Black’s character.

The movie also features Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, and Sebastian Hansen, and is accompanied by the MGMT track “Time To Pretend,” a song about youthful aspirations and the harsh realities of adult life, though the trailer cleverly omits the more somber line of the song about life’s inevitable end.

The film was directed by Oscar nominee Jared Hess, known for Nacho Libre and Napoleon Dynamite, with a production team including staff from Minecraft’s developer, Mojang.

Before Jared Hess was brought on, Rob McElhenney of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia was set to direct with a significant budget from Warner Bros. However, following a change in leadership at Warner Bros., the new executives decided against McElhenney’s vision. Prior to McElhenney, director Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine) proposed a Goonies-style adventure for the Minecraft film, which Mojang ultimately rejected, leading Levy to step away from the project.

The screenplay for A Minecraft Movie was penned by Chris Bowman and Hubbel Palmer, and its theatrical release is scheduled for April 4, 2025. Notably, A Minecraft Movie isn’t the only video game-based film debuting this April; Sony’s Until Dawn movie will premiere later in the month on April 25.
