Street Fighter Movie Loses Release Date After Finding New Director

Sony Pictures has recently announced that the upcoming Street Fighter film has been withdrawn from its scheduled release dates, although this does not necessarily imply that the project has been canceled.

Originally set for a March 20, 2026 premiere, the film has now disappeared from Sony’s upcoming list of releases. This decision comes as a surprise, especially since a new director, Kitao Sakurai, was just assigned to the project in late February after replacing the former co-directors, the Philippou brothers.

This change in direction might have been a sign that the film was moving forward. According to Variety, there is still a possibility that the Street Fighter movie will be slotted into a new date and make its way to audiences in the future. Currently, however, the movie lacks an official release date.

Fans of the franchise may remember the original Street Fighter movie released in 1994, which featured Jean-Claude Van Damme and grossed nearly $100 million. A later attempt to reboot the franchise came with the 2009 film, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, starring Kristin Kreuk, but it failed to perform well at the box office.

While fans of the Street Fighter games may need to be patient a bit longer for the new movie, they can look forward to another adaptation from the fighting game genre hitting theaters soon. Mortal Kombat 2 is set to release this October.

In addition to the Street Fighter adaptation, a slew of other video game-based movies are currently in production. Upcoming releases include A Minecraft Movie, set to premiere on April 4, and the Until Dawn movie, which will debut on April 25.
