Sam Fisher Makes His Return in Netflix’s Splinter Cell: Deathwatch
It has been more than ten years since Sam Fisher was the protagonist of a Splinter Cell video game, however, fans can look forward to his return this autumn. Netflix has recently unveiled a trailer for a new animated series titled Splinter Cell: Deathwatch, which is scheduled to premiere on October 14. In this upcoming series, viewers will see Sam Fisher embarking on a fresh mission.
New Voice for an Iconic Character
Historically, Michael Ironside lent his voice to the character of Sam Fisher in the majority of the Splinter Cell games. This time around, however, the character will be voiced by Liev Schreiber. The trailer itself doesn’t dive too deeply into the plot, showcasing instead a series of scenes featuring Sam in action. One notable moment in the trailer highlights the tombstone of Douglas Shetland, a friend Sam was compelled to kill after he turned rogue. This detail suggests that the series might take place during or around the timeline of the games Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow and Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory.
Additional Cast and Crew Details
The series will also feature Janet Varney as Anna “Grim” GrÃmsdóttir, Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Zinnia McKenna, and Joel Oulette as Thunder. The project is being spearheaded by Derek Kolstad, co-creator of John Wick, who serves as the head writer and producer. The animation responsibilities have been handled by Sun Creature Studio and Fost.
Future of Splinter Cell Adaptations
Despite the excitement surrounding the animated series, it may be the only new Splinter Cell adaptation for some time. A previously planned live-action film was scrapped last year after several years in development. The last adaptation prior to this series was a BBC Radio play titled Splinter Cell: Firewall, which starred Andonis Anthony as Sam Fisher.
Meanwhile, Ubisoft, the creator of the Splinter Cell series, announced a remake of the original Splinter Cell game in 2022. However, they have yet to confirm a release date for this remake. Additionally, Ubisoft recently introduced Steam achievements for Splinter Cell: Blacklist, a game originally released in 2013.
