Upcoming Release of Splinter Cell: Deathwatch on Netflix
The highly anticipated Splinter Cell: Deathwatch series is set to debut on Netflix in just a few days, marking the first significant solo appearance of the character Sam Fisher in over ten years, other than a few novel adaptations. Derek Kolstad, the creator and main producer of the series, recently shared his thoughts on his creative approach to the series and the freedom he was given by Ubisoft, the franchise’s owner.
In an interview with GamesRadar, Kolstad, who is also the mind behind the John Wick franchise, discussed how his experience with the Splinter Cell series differed from working with established Marvel properties.
“Working on Falcon and The Winter Soldier meant working within Disney’s strict guidelines,” Kolstad remarked. “It was like being in a titanium tunnel—nevertheless, it was enjoyable because I was allowed to play with their well-established characters and settings.”
Freedom in Creative Direction
Contrary to his work with tightly controlled Marvel characters, Kolstad found a refreshing level of autonomy when developing the Splinter Cell series. He likened the experience to navigating a level in a Splinter Cell game, where the path isn’t rigidly defined.
“What I really appreciate about this project is how the only real limitations were to honor and love the character and the original material. Beyond that, they really let me take the reins,” Kolstad added enthusiastically.
It has been confirmed that the storyline of the Splinter Cell Netflix series will align with the game’s canon in most respects, despite Ubisoft’s hands-off approach. Liev Schreiber will star as Sam Fisher, taking over from Michael Ironside, who has traditionally voiced the character. Ironside, who was absent from the role in 2013’s Splinter Cell Blacklist due to a battle with cancer, has since recovered and returned to voice Fisher in several cameo appearances.

While fans eagerly await the October 14 release of Deathwatch, details about the long-awaited remake of the Splinter Cell game remain sparse. The project, announced years ago by Ubisoft Toronto, is set to be the longest interval between releases in the series’ history.
The anticipation continues to build not only for the series but also for further news on the game’s development status. As the release date approaches, fans of the series are hopeful for both a captivating show and more updates on the next game installment.
