Netflix Announces Advancement on Live-Action Assassin’s Creed Series
After five years since its initial announcement, Netflix is set to proceed with the production of its live-action series based on the popular video game, Assassin’s Creed.
Today, Netflix confirmed that the Assassin’s Creed series has been officially approved and will be led by Roberto Patino and David Wiener, who were previously showrunners for DMZ and Halo, respectively. Both Patino and Wiener will be the creators, showrunners, and executive producers of the series, with contributions from Ubisoft.
Insights from the Showrunners
In their shared statement, Patino and Wiener elaborated on the series’ underlying themes, emphasizing that beyond the dynamic action and visual spectacle, the series will explore profound human stories centered on the search for purpose and the struggles with identity, destiny, and faith.
“This series is about the raw human emotions of power, desire, revenge, and greed,” they stated. “Above all, it underscores the significance of human connection across different cultures and eras and ponders the consequences for humanity when these bonds are severed.”

The development of the series faced several hurdles over the past five years, witnessing the cycle of various creative talents, such as Jeb Stuart of Die Hard fame, coming and going from the project. However, specific details about the internal developments have remained under wraps.
As of now, there is scant information available about the specific historical settings or the integration with the existing video game lore of the franchise.
Netflix and Ubisoft’s Vision
Peter Friedlander, Vice President of Scripted Series at Netflix, reflected on the collaboration with Ubisoft since their partnership announcement in 2020. “Our ambitious aim was to transpose the rich and expansive universe of Assassin’s Creed into a series that captures new and imaginative elements,” Friedlander commented. “Witnessing this vision evolve under the skilled stewardship of Roberto Patino and David Wiener has been truly inspiring.”
He added that the series promises to deliver an epic adventure that respects the legacy of the Assassin’s Creed games while offering an unprecedented experience of the Brotherhood to both ardent followers and those new to the saga.
Background and Future Endeavors
This series isn’t the first attempt to adapt Assassin’s Creed into a live-action format; a major film starring Michael Fassbender was released in 2016, receiving mixed reviews. The lessons learned from that film have influenced Ubisoft’s approach to this new project.
Meanwhile, the Assassin’s Creed video game franchise continues to expand. The upcoming major expansion for Assassin’s Creed Shadows set in feudal Japan is expected before the end of 2025. Additionally, fans are eagerly anticipating the announcement of an Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag remaster, followed by the development of Assassin’s Creed Hexe, projected for release later this decade.
Anticipation for Netflix’s Series
While today’s announcement from Netflix did not specify a release date for their Assassin’s Creed series, it clearly signals a positive momentum in the project’s development.
