Roblox's Grow a Garden Towers Above Even the Biggest Steam Games — but You Probably Have No Idea What It Is

The Roblox farming simulator, Grow a Garden, has become a massive hit, drawing in millions of players from various platforms including PC, mobile, and consoles, surpassing many leading games in popularity. But what makes it so special?

On any given day within the next week, it’s likely that nearly 2 million users will be engaging with Grow a Garden on Roblox. This information comes directly from Roblox’s own user tracking system, which shows this vibrant, free-to-play game leading the pack across numerous categories. This game outshines other Roblox offerings, with the runner-up, Brookhaven RP, attracting 590,000 players at the time of reporting.

Attracting 1.5 million players is no small achievement, and for Grow a Garden, that’s actually on the lower end of its usual player base.

Last weekend, the farming simulator peaked at over 8.8 million active users, not only surpassing other Roblox games but also breaking several active user records since it first surpassed 5 million active players earlier in the month. The game was launched by a 16-year-old on March 25, 2025, and has since amassed 3.4 billion visits.

For perspective, Counter-Strike 2, a top game on Steam, reached a peak of nearly 1.86 million players last month. PUBG: Battlegrounds holds Steam’s record with a peak of 3.25 million players in 2018. While Grow a Garden’s numbers are impressive, they still lag behind the free-to-play titan Fortnite, which recorded a peak of 15.3 million players during a 2020 event. Grow a Garden may not be at the very top yet, but it’s quickly ascending the ranks, proving Roblox as a platform to be reckoned with as millions dive into its expansive content offerings.

Exploring Grow a Garden

In Grow a Garden, players literally cultivate a garden. This simple farming game strips away complexity and provides a straightforward, engaging experience that quickly teaches players the ropes. Upon entering the game, each player is given their own plot of land and starts with 20 Sheckles, the game’s currency, to buy basic seeds like carrots. However, it soon becomes apparent how expansive your garden can become, evidenced by other players’ plots filled with towering trees and vibrant fruits.

Selling a grown carrot nets you a few Sheckles, and as you accumulate more, you can afford a variety of plants and flowers, from blueberries to orange tulips. Players find satisfaction in watching their gardens and wealth grow in real-time. Though the gameplay might seem simplistic, those who delve deeper will find more layers to explore, such as garden customization options and dynamic weather effects that can enhance crop values. Regular updates and community events also keep the player base engaged and continually growing.

The Creative Minds Behind Grow a Garden

The young creator who initially developed Grow a Garden remains involved in its development, supported now by the expertise of DoBig Studios and renowned developer Janzen Madsen, known as Jandel, along with his team at Splitting Point. While these names are well-recognized in the Roblox community, Grow a Garden stood out even before its popularity explosion.

“The game was put together by a 16-year-old in just a few days. We noticed it when it had about 1,000 to 2,000 concurrent users,” Madsen shared. “We partnered with the developer, crafted a live-ops strategy, updated the game, and the rest is history.”

Since then, the development team at Splitting Point has been instrumental in laying the groundwork for the game’s success. Madsen praises the original developer’s creativity and unique perspective, noting that their collaboration is more of a partnership, with everyone having an equal say in the development process.

Madsen attributes the explosive growth of Grow a Garden to strategic updates and engaging events, such as a recent attempt at setting a dance party world record with a live DJ. These initiatives not only enhance the game’s appeal but also deepen player engagement, contributing to its unprecedented success on the Roblox platform.

From its modest beginnings, Grow a Garden has blossomed into Roblox’s biggest game, supported by a robust operation to sustain its large and active fan base. While the developers profit from their efforts, with most in-game purchases made using Robux, Roblox’s premium currency, the game continues to offer numerous ways for players to invest real money, ensuring its ongoing revenue stream.

Continued Growth and Influence

Grow a Garden’s staggering popularity underscores a broader trend on Roblox, a platform known for its constant influx of new and varied experiences. While not every new game hits the top of the charts, many like Blue Lock: Rivals and Dress to Impress maintain significant player engagement long after their debut. This isn’t a new phenomenon; Roblox has been a staple in gaming for years, consistently attracting more users.

Despite some skepticism about the legitimacy of Grow a Garden’s success, with accusations of artificial inflation through bots, Roblox officials confirm that the game’s growth is authentic, driven by strong user retention and vibrant social interactions. They emphasize that preliminary analyses validate the game’s genuine, community-driven popularity.

Madsen, meanwhile, continues to champion Roblox as a legitimate and innovative gaming platform, dismissing criticisms of it as merely a “silly platform for kids.” He argues that some of the most talented game designers are working within Roblox, pushing creative boundaries and solving complex problems, making it a continually evolving and exciting space for both developers and players.

Whether or not Grow a Garden has reached its peak, it has certainly set a high standard for what’s possible on Roblox, planting seeds for future games to achieve similar or even greater success. While the community waits to see what new heights will be reached, there remains plenty to explore and enjoy within Grow a Garden itself.
