The Rocky Start of Civilization 7 on Steam
It’s evident that Civilization 7 has not had the smoothest debut on Steam since its release in February. The latest entry in the strategy game series has been facing challenges in attracting players on Valve’s platform, with Steam user reviews currently showing a “mixed” reaction. Despite several updates from the developer, Firaxis, aimed at improving player sentiment, Civilization 7 still trails behind its predecessors, Civilization 6 and the 15-year-old Civilization 5, in terms of player numbers on Steam.
Broader Horizons Beyond Steam
While the performance on Steam doesn’t fully encapsulate the game’s reception, Civilization 7 also made its mark by launching on other platforms such as PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch. Moreover, an upcoming version for the Nintendo Switch 2, which will utilize the new Joy-Con mouse controls, is expected soon. Despite these expansions, PC remains the primary platform for the Civilization series, where Civilization 7 notably struggles.
Optimism from the Developers
“I’m thrilled with Civ 7 so far,” stated Zelnick, expressing satisfaction with the game despite some initial hiccups. He commended the Firaxis team for their effective response to the early issues and maintained optimism about addressing remaining concerns to meet consumer expectations and ultimately achieve success with the title.
Zelnick also highlighted the long sales cycle typical of the Civilization franchise, suggesting that Civilization 7 is likely to follow this trend. “The history of all the Civilization releases shows that initial changes can upset our consumers who are deeply passionate about the series,” he explained. He believes that, over time, players will recognize these changes as enhancements and the game will perform well commercially.
Initial Player Feedback and Game Evolution
Upon its release, Civilization 7 faced criticism concerning its user interface, a lack of diverse maps, and missing features that fans expected based on previous installments. Zelnick’s comments about hardcore Civilization fans’ initial nervousness reflect the significant alterations Firaxis implemented in the game.
One of the major innovations in Civilization 7 is a campaign that spans three distinct Ages: Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern. Completion of each Age triggers an Age Transition for all players and AI opponents, during which players select a new civilization for the new Age, decide on Legacies to retain, and witness the evolution of the game world. This transition mechanism is a first for the Civilization games, and Zelnick is confident that fans will grow to appreciate it over time.
Future Prospects and Expansion
Though specific sales figures for Civilization 7 have not been released, Take-Two’s financial reports show intentions to “pursue opportunities to expand the audience.” This includes the recent launch of a Civilization 7 VR version for Meta Quest 3 and 3S, and the anticipated release for the Nintendo Switch 2, indicating ongoing efforts to reach a broader audience and enhance the game’s appeal across various platforms.
