Take-Two Boss Says It's 'Shown a Willingness to Support Legacy Titles' Amid Questions About the Future of GTA Online Post-GTA 6

The Future of GTA Online with the Arrival of Grand Theft Auto 6

As the release date for Grand Theft Auto 6 edges closer, set for the fall of 2025, players of GTA Online are left pondering the fate of their current virtual playground. The announcement of GTA 6 has sparked widespread speculation among the gaming community about the implications for the existing GTA Online platform.

GTA Online, a highly successful live service game developed by Rockstar, has continued to captivate gamers for more than ten years. Its profitability and popularity are believed to have shaped Rockstar’s strategy, notably their decision to focus on enhancing the live service aspect rather than developing story expansions for Grand Theft Auto 5. This strategy, while lucrative, has not been without its detractors among the fanbase. However, a more significant concern is now on the rise.

Potential Evolution or Replacement of GTA Online

With the debut of GTA 6, there is anticipation of a new iteration of GTA Online. This could manifest as either a direct continuation rebranded as GTA Online 2 or simply an upgraded version retaining the name GTA Online. This uncertainty has left many players worried that their investments of time, effort, and money in the current version may be rendered obsolete if a new platform is introduced.

Although specifics about any new version of GTA Online have not been officially disclosed, discussions around the topic have been informed by Take-Two’s past approaches to similar situations. For instance, Take-Two’s handling of the NBA 2K Online series offers some insights.

NBA 2K Online was initially launched in 2012 targeting the Asian market, followed by NBA 2K Online 2 in 2017. Notably, both games have been maintained simultaneously, allowing the community of the original game to continue enjoying their experience without disruption.

Take-Two’s CEO, Zelnick, commented on the situation, albeit cautiously, focusing on the company’s general policy rather than specific upcoming projects. “I’m speaking in hypothetical terms since no announcements have been made,” Zelnick stated. He emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting their games as long as there is active engagement from the community. This approach was evident with the NBA 2K Online series in China, where both versions of the game continue to coexist and serve a robust player base.

This philosophy suggests that the introduction of a GTA Online 2 might not necessarily mean the end of the current GTA Online. If the player base remains active, it’s likely that Rockstar will continue to support it.

While much is still unknown about GTA 6, given that only a preliminary trailer and a broad release timeframe have been shared, the gaming community is eagerly awaiting more details. This anticipation is heightened by the proximity of GTA 6’s release date to that of another major title, Borderlands 4, announced for September of the same year. More information from Rockstar is expected to emerge soon, shedding light on their plans not only for GTA 6 but also for the transition or transformation of GTA Online.

In the meantime, discussions and speculations continue, including debates on the strategic decisions surrounding platform availability for GTA 6, such as potentially excluding a PC version at launch. Zelnick’s previous comments provide some reassurance to the gaming community, hinting at ongoing support for existing game versions in the face of new releases.
