Alan Ritchson, known for his role in Reacher, has often been a fan favorite for the role of Batman. However, despite discussions with James Gunn, Ritchson has indicated that he unlikely sees himself donning the Dark Knight’s cape in the DC Universe (DCU).
During a conversation with Variety, Ritchson mentioned that there have been conversations about him potentially playing Batman, particularly referencing the prominent role in The Brave and the Bold. Yet, he expressed significant doubt about the likelihood of this role coming to fruition, stating, “I strongly don’t think that Batman is in my future.”
Nevertheless, Ritchson remains optimistic about his involvement with DC, suggesting that other opportunities within the DCU might be on the horizon. “I do think there is something in my future with DC,” he affirmed, hoping his relationship with the franchise continues.
The role of the DCU Batman remains highly coveted and is a topic of considerable speculation in Hollywood. Recent developments have seen James Gunn dismissing the possibility of Marvel’s Chris Pratt playing Batman, although Pratt’s involvement in the DCU in another capacity seems likely.
In February, James Gunn and Peter Safran, co-CEO of DC Studios, announced that The Brave and the Bold would introduce a new Batman into the DCU, explicitly excluding Robert Pattinson, who will continue his portrayal in Matt Reeves’ Batman Epic Crime Saga.
The discussions around the release of Reeves’ The Batman 2 in 2027 and a subsequent third installment raise questions about how The Brave and the Bold will be timed. Gunn is faced with the challenge of managing two different actors portraying Batman in separate DC universes.
As per the latest updates, The Brave and the Bold is under “very active development,” with the storyline reportedly shaping up well. However, whether Andy Muschietti, director of The Flash, will helm this new project remains uncertain. Gunn and Safran are crafting the script and plan to present it to Muschietti once it’s polished and ready for review.
More recently, Gunn clarified his role in the development of The Brave and the Bold, noting that he is not writing it himself but is closely collaborating with another writer to perfect it. “Batman’s my biggest issue in all of DC right now, personally,” Gunn stated, emphasizing the importance of getting the character right for the DCU, alongside Wonder Woman.

Gunn also shed light on the direction he envisions for Batman, stressing the need for the character to have a purpose beyond just being a major draw for Warner Bros. He expressed disinterest in a campy, comedic Batman, indicating a different creative direction. “I think I have a way in,” he revealed, hinting at a fresh approach while collaborating with the writer to bring this vision to life.
