Marvel Star Reveals Sleeping Dogs Movie Milestone

At the beginning of this year, Simu Liu, known for his role in Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” announced his involvement in a film adaptation of the 2012 video game “Sleeping Dogs,” originally developed by United Front Games and published by Square Enix. It has been quite some time since any new information has emerged, but Liu recently shared that the project has achieved a significant progress.

Script Developments and Social Media Updates

Liu took to the social media platform X to disclose that a fresh script draft for “Sleeping Dogs” has been completed. Interestingly, he chose to redact the name of the scriptwriter in his announcement. To lighten the mood, he humorously posted a picture of his own pet dog napping, aligning with the theme of the update.

In a subsequent message, Liu expressed his satisfaction with Square Enix, describing the company as “absolutely great.” However, he pointed out some challenges with the studios, noting their lack of recognition for the importance of the “Sleeping Dogs” intellectual property (IP). Nonetheless, he remained optimistic about bringing them on board with the vision for the film.

Background on Sleeping Dogs and Film Adaptations

“Sleeping Dogs” is set against the vibrant backdrop of Hong Kong. The game follows Wei Shen, an undercover cop who penetrates the ranks of the Triads to dismantle the organization from within. If the movie proceeds, Liu is expected to step into the shoes of Shen. Previously, in 2017, Donnie Yen was attached to star in an earlier attempt to bring the game to the big screen, with plans to start production in 2022. However, that project did not materialize, and Yen confirmed his departure from the role in January of this year.

Shortly after Yen’s exit, Liu announced his association with the film. Beyond just making a movie, Liu expressed his desire to see a sequel to the game developed. Although a direct sequel to “Sleeping Dogs” was never produced, there was an attempt to create a spin-off titled “Triad Wars,” which unfortunately was canceled during its beta phase. The closure of United Front Games in 2016 ended further development.

In the landscape of video game adaptations, “Sleeping Dogs” is just one of many projects in the works. The industry continues to see a surge in video game movies, leaving fans wondering how many of these will actually see the light of day. With Liu’s recent updates, there appears to be renewed momentum for the “Sleeping Dogs” film, potentially bringing this beloved game to a new audience in a different medium.
