Resellers Beware: Nier Automata Dev Yoko Taro's Real Autograph Includes 'Small, Unknown Features' to Help Spot Fakes

Alert for Yoko Taro Fans: Beware of Fake Autographs

Yoko Taro, the famed director of the Nier series, has recently issued a cautionary note to his followers regarding counterfeit autographs. He pointed out that a significant number of items claiming his signature are not genuine.

Identifying Authentic Signatures

In a response to a fan on Twitter / X who posted an image of a Nier: Automata soundtrack being sold for €200 (approximately $232) with his supposed signature, Taro disclosed his method for ensuring authenticity. He mentioned that his genuine autographs contain subtle, unique elements that he uses to identify real signatures from fakes. These special features help him confirm the authenticity, especially in cases where his signature is being resold.

“This autograph is a fake. I include small unknown features in my real autographs to prevent reselling, so I can tell when one isn’t genuine,” Taro stated on social media. He further advised, “I’ve confirmed that nearly half of the autographs being resold are actually fake, so please don’t buy them.”

Although Taro did not specify what these unique features are—and likely never will—the fans are actively comparing their own autographed items in hopes of validating them against known authentic signatures from the esteemed game developer.

Yoko Taro’s Current Endeavors

When not dealing with issues related to his autographs, Yoko Taro remains a pivotal figure in the gaming industry. Last year, Yosuke Saito, executive officer at Square Enix and producer of the Nier series, hinted at a new project involving Taro. However, he remained tight-lipped about whether it would be the third installment of Nier.

“I’ve been talking about wanting to do something with [Yoko Taro] and [series composer Keiichi Okabe] for some time now,” Saito shared, adding that he would have more to say soon. His playful comment left fans guessing: “It might be Nier, it might not be Nier. That’s about all I can say for now.”

The Future of Nier

Since the release of Nier: Automata in February 2017 and the Nier Replicant remake in 2021, fans have been eager for news of a new mainline sequel. Although Square Enix has yet to confirm anything definitive, hope fluctuates with the company’s sporadic updates.

In November 2023, Saito mentioned that another Nier game would definitely happen during Taro’s lifetime, though it was not imminent as they were focused on another project. However, in March 2024, Taro himself seemed to tease the possibility of a third Nier game during a concert, leaving fans both curious and excited about the future of the series.
