Recent Announcement Causes Mixed Reactions Among Gamers

With the recent unveiling of Octopath Traveler 0 at the latest Nintendo Partner Direct, a wave of enthusiasm was quickly tainted by disappointment for some fans. The cause of the dismay lies in the revelation that the Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game will only be available as a Game-Key Card, rather than a traditional physical cartridge.

Details from multiple retail listings on platforms such as Amazon, Best Buy, and the official Square Enix site confirm that the Nintendo Switch 2 game boxes will merely contain a Game-Key Card. This is indicated on the box art itself, which contrasts with other versions that offer a full physical cartridge. This includes the game’s extravagant $230 Collector’s Edition, which also adopts the Game-Key Card format for the Nintendo Switch 2, while providing a physical cartridge for other platforms.

Conversely, the Nintendo Switch 1 version of the game does include a physical cartridge. However, it comes with its own set of limitations. According to Square Enix’s statements on social media, there is no option available to upgrade from the Nintendo Switch 1 version to the Nintendo Switch 2 version, either for free or at a cost. This dilemma forces players to choose between settling for the less advanced Switch 1 version or accepting a Game-Key Card for the Switch 2.

The move to Game-Key Cards might seem trivial to some, but it has significant implications for many gamers. These cards, while physical in form, do not actually contain the game but rather a download code. This essentially makes them a digital version, which can be a letdown for those who prefer physical copies to avoid lengthy downloads and to have full ownership of their game copies.

The lack of an upgrade path for the Switch 1 version adds to the frustration. Imagine purchasing the game for the original Switch, only to later acquire a Switch 2 and be unable to play the game you already bought without repurchasing it in a different format. This scenario highlights a significant oversight in customer convenience and satisfaction.

Since their introduction, Game-Key Cards have been a source of annoyance for many Nintendo enthusiasts and even game developers, who are concerned about the implications for game preservation.

Nintendo defends the use of Game-Key Cards, particularly for games with large file sizes that are challenging to fit on traditional cartridges. Despite this, they acknowledge the downside of potentially prolonged download times. Octopath Traveler 0, for example, has a substantial 5GB file size. Daniel Ahmad, director of research & insights at Niko Partners, notes that key cards can be a cost-effective alternative to more expensive cartridges, helping to keep retail prices lower while still offering a semblance of a physical product.

Despite these justifications, the excitement surrounding new releases has been somewhat dampened. Concerns are growing, especially among Square Enix fans, as seen with the Game-Key Card-only approach for the Bravely Default 1 HD Remaster. It raises questions about whether this strategy will be a standard practice for all future Nintendo Switch 2 releases from Square Enix, including the anticipated The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales. Only time will tell how these decisions will ultimately affect the gaming community’s reception of new titles.
