Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum

Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema have scheduled the release of The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum for December 17, 2027. This announcement reveals a new timeline for the much-anticipated journey into Sméagol’s narrative.

This latest update positions the film’s debut a significant two years ahead, marking at least a one-year postponement from the initially planned 2026 release. Despite the delay, enthusiasts of the genre are likely already making plans for their 2027 holiday season around this premiere.

Andy Serkis, known for his directorial work on Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle, is set to direct The Hunt for Gollum. Serkis is not only recognized for his directing skills but also as an accomplished actor, famously portraying Caesar in the 2010 Planet of the Apes trilogy and the iconic character Gollum in both the original The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. His dual role in this upcoming film, both in front of and behind the camera, is a thrilling development for fans.

Joining Serkis are other experienced Middle-earth creators, including producers Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, and Zane Weiner. The screenplay will be crafted by Walsh, Boyens, Phoebe Gittins, and Arty Papageorgiou, who are set to bring a rich depth to the storyline.

Peter Jackson has teased some elements of the plot last year, indicating that the film will delve into untold backstories of beloved characters. He expressed a specific interest in exploring aspects of Gollum’s past not previously covered in the films, promising to draw inspiration directly from J.R.R. Tolkien’s original works.

In terms of character appearances, Gandalf is anticipated to be featured, with potential involvement in this and possibly another future live-action project. According to comments made by Boyens to Empire magazine last October, fans might even see Ian McKellen reprising his role as the beloved wizard if all goes as planned.

With a release set for three Decembers from now, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum promises to be a significant addition to the cinematic world of Middle-earth. Meanwhile, fans can stay engaged with the universe by following updates on Amazon Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, which has been confirmed for a third season earlier this year.
