Fans of J.R.R. Tolkien are in for a treat as two new beautifully crafted book box sets are set to be released, perfect for adding to their collections. The first to arrive is the Tolkien Myths and Legends Box Set, scheduled for release on June 10. This set includes some of Tolkien’s lesser-known original works as well as his translations of classic English literature. Initially priced at $125, Amazon is currently offering a preorder discount, bringing the price down to $100. Following this release, on August 19, new editions of The Great Tales of Middle-earth will be available. This collection includes the last three prose novels set in Tolkien’s famed fantasy world. Amazon has also reduced the preorder price for this set from $125 to $105.

Originally published over a span of 14 years from 1983 to 1996, The History of Middle-earth compiles extensive notes Tolkien made while creating his fantasy world, which spans three different ages and over 6,500 years. These notes were not published until after Tolkien’s death in 1973, when his son, Christopher Tolkien, took on the monumental task of editing and curating these writings into a 12-volume series, now known as Tolkien’s legendarium.

Although The Silmarillion, which is included in the new History of Middle-earth editions, was first published in 1977, it forms a significant part of the legendarium, showcasing Tolkien’s development as a worldbuilder. This is why, despite not being one of the original 12 volumes, The Silmarillion is presented as the first book in The History of Middle-earth.

For the 2024 hardcover box set releases, William Morrow has reorganized The History of Middle-earth into 15 separate books, totaling 5,328 pages across its 15 volumes. With Amazon’s current pricing, all four box sets are available for $262, offering a saving of over $200.

The Lord of the Rings & The Hobbit Movies

Fans of The Lord of the Rings should also consider the new Steelbook Editions of The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers. Previously only available as part of a costly Limited Edition Trilogy Box Set, the first two films in Peter Jackson’s acclaimed adaptation are now available for $28 each (released on May 27). It is anticipated that The Return of the King will soon be released in a matching 4K Blu-ray steelbook. The Steelbook Trilogy Set is still available, but at a premium price of $180, significantly more than the standard edition 4K box set priced at $68.
