The Witcher's Liam Hemsworth Says He Was "Reluctant" To Take Over For Henry Cavill

Liam Hemsworth Steps into Geralt’s Boots

Liam Hemsworth is set to take on the iconic role of Geralt, previously portrayed by Henry Cavill, in the fourth and fifth seasons of the series, which will conclude the show. Hemsworth admitted to having initial doubts about joining the cast when he first discussed the role.

In an interview with RadioTimes, Hemsworth shared his initial hesitation, stating he was “pretty reluctant” when approached for the role. “I had a lot of concerns and questions about it all. I was a big fan of the video game and then I watched the series, and was a fan of the series, and I read the books,” he explained.

What made him unsure? According to Hemsworth, it was the strong and devoted fan base that had grown fond of Cavill’s portrayal of the character. He expressed his reservations but also acknowledged his personal interest in the franchise.

“I think if I wasn’t a fan myself, if I didn’t care about it, I wouldn’t have come on board. The reason I came on board was because I was a fan, and because I thought that I could do justice to this character. I thought that could bring an interesting interpretation to this part of the story,” Hemsworth remarked.

Maintaining Geralt’s Signature Look

Showrunner Lauren Schmidt-Hissrich also commented on the casting transition, noting that when Cavill decided to leave, the production team aimed to preserve Geralt’s distinctive appearance while welcoming a new actor into the role.

“We knew there were things that were really important to keep with Geralt–obviously, his look has to stay the same,” she stated. “He’s a different human being, but I think there’s so many things that are sort of synonymous with Geralt–the white wig, the yellow eyes, the black leather and not wearing any color, and the way he walks through the world.”

Furthermore, Schmidt-Hissrich highlighted that Hemsworth invested considerable effort in crafting a unique interpretation of Geralt, making the character distinctly his own. “He needed to make Geralt his, and it was really important to let him do that and let him explore it and find it,” she elaborated.

Upcoming Seasons and New Additions

The Witcher’s fourth season is scheduled to premiere on October 30 on Netflix, with critically acclaimed actor Laurence Fishburne also joining the cast. A fifth and concluding season is planned for release at a later date.
