The Witcher's Yennefer Actress Anya Chalotra Opens Up About Online Abuse

The fourth season of The Witcher has made its debut on Netflix, and as the series approaches its fifth and final season, members of the cast are sharing their thoughts about their journey through the enchanting realm of Andrzej Sapkowski, filled with magic and monsters. Anya Chalotra, portraying the character Yennefer of Vengerberg, has expressed mixed feelings in a recent interview, stating her role as the powerful sorceress will be missed, though the online abuse will not.

In a discussion with The Guardian, Chalotra opened up about her challenging encounters with the sometimes harsh and toxic fanbase online. Despite her deep engagement with the source material, including reading the books and exploring the games to better embody her character on Netflix, she faced severe backlash from some fans. This negativity eventually led her to withdraw from social media platforms.

Chalotra shared with The Guardian, “I’m not on social media anymore. I quit,” explaining that she has been offline for quite some time. “The initial season was tough… there was significant negativity. It was overwhelming at times. This being one of my earliest roles, it struck me quite hard. I quickly realized the intensity of it all.”

The Witcher series has achieved remarkable viewership, becoming the most-watched TV series on Netflix in 2022, with its four seasons garnering hundreds of millions of views. Such widespread attention can feel overwhelming, almost like a ‘trial by fire’ as Chalotra described her experience. “It was like being thrown into the deep end,” she remarked. “Intimidating, yet incredibly exciting.”

Chalotra isn’t the only cast member to face such challenges. Liam Hemsworth, the new Geralt of Rivia, also encountered significant online harassment following his casting as the White Wolf after Henry Cavill’s departure. The hostility Chalotra faced highlights the broader issue of targeted online hate towards public figures, particularly women, often under the guise of passionate fandom. Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich has pointed out that if people don’t appreciate the fourth season of The Witcher or any other aspect of the series, there are alternative ways to engage with Sapkowski’s world, such as through the original books and video games.

All eight episodes of The Witcher Season 4 are currently streaming on Netflix. Production for the fifth season has already concluded, although a specific release date has yet to be announced.
