DC Universe Updates: Supergirl’s New Title and More
The upcoming film previously known as Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow has officially been retitled to simply Supergirl. This change was confirmed by James Gunn, the head of DC Universe, during a recent interview with Rolling Stone.
During the conversation, Gunn delved into the rationale behind renaming the film, a decision-making process similar to that used for the recent renaming of Superman: Legacy to Superman. He described a unique strategy used by his team known as a “premortem,” which they conduct a few months prior to beginning production. The purpose of this exercise is to anticipate potential problems that could derail the film’s success, allowing them to address these issues in advance.
Gunn explained, “I’m always cutting. For example, with Legacy, we do a premortem. This involves gathering the project team and hypothetically discussing what could lead the film to be an epic disaster, allowing everyone to speak freely. It’s during these sessions that you hear the unspoken concerns you might find on other productions, like doubts about casting decisions or complaints about a consistently late production designer.”
He continued, “One of my own contributions was the original title, Superman: Legacy. Even though I was the one who named it, I started having second thoughts. I’m tired of the superhero title followed by a colon and another name. Moreover, it seemed to look backward whereas we aim to look forward. Despite the film’s theme involving legacy, the consensus was clear for a change.”
The film Supergirl, directed by Craig Gillespie and penned by Ana Nogueira, features Milly Alcock in the starring role. Details about the plot remain scarce, as Alcock has been notably reserved in her recent media appearances. However, Jason Momoa, known for his role in A Minecraft Movie, has been more forthcoming, recently hinting at his exciting Lobo costume for the upcoming movie. Gunn shared a laugh over Momoa’s candid revelations.
The newly titled Supergirl is set to premiere on June 26, 2026.
