Hayao Miyazaki's Legendary First Movie Is Getting A Steelbook Limited Edition

Before the establishment of Studio Ghibli, acclaimed director Hayao Miyazaki directed his first film, “Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro,” in 1979. This animated heist movie, which Miyazaki both wrote and directed, is based on the Lupin III manga series from the 1960s. It is recognized as a pivotal work that marked the beginning of a new era for animation in both Japan and the United States. Excitingly, this iconic film is set to be released in a new steelbook Blu-ray edition on December 12. This edition will offer enhanced video quality and a variety of special features. Fans can pre-order the “Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro Limited Edition Steelbook Blu-ray” exclusively from the Crunchyroll Store for $50.

Exclusive Features of the Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro Steelbook Blu-ray

While this steelbook edition is an appealing collector’s item, there is also a 4K version available, which was released in 2021 and is currently for sale at Amazon for $28. Although it lacks the new steelbook casing, this version includes a 4K presentation, reversible cover art, a slipcover, and the same special features as the steelbook.

Adapted from Kazuhiko Katō’s beloved manga, “The Castle of Cagliostro” follows the notorious thief Lupin III and his accomplice Daisuke Jigen as they investigate the origin of counterfeit money following a heist. Their adventure quickly turns into a daring rescue mission to save a damsel in distress and uncover a legendary treasure. Despite being nearly half a century old, the film remains engaging due to its dynamic animation, fast-paced action, and artistic style that later became signature elements of Miyazaki’s work with Studio Ghibli. Highly regarded as one of the greatest adventure films ever made, it has influenced other directors such as Steven Spielberg and John Lasseter of Pixar.

Miyazaki’s other Studio Ghibli films continue to captivate audiences thanks to their exceptional production quality and themes focusing on environmentalism, magic, and the impacts of war. Below is a list of recent Studio Ghibli steelbook Blu-ray releases:
