Crunchyroll Is Launching An Exclusive Berserk: The Golden Age - Memorial Edition Steelbook Blu-ray

Years after its debut, the manga Berserk remains a benchmark in the dark fantasy genre. Over time, it has inspired several anime adaptations, none of which have covered the saga in its entirety but have each presented a distinctive interpretation of Berserk’s initial major narrative arc. One notable adaptation is Berserk: The Golden Age, which started as a movie trilogy in 2012, later transformed into a 13-episode OVA. This adaptation is making a comeback with the upcoming release of Berserk: The Golden Age Arc – Memorial Edition Steelbook Blu-ray. This new release, housed in a stylish steelbook case, will include the entire 13-episode series across two discs. Priced at $75, it will be available beginning October 28, with pre-orders exclusively through Crunchyroll’s online store.

Berserk: The Golden Age marks the second anime adaptation following the 1997 series, which also explored the Golden Age storyline of the manga. The trilogy is celebrated for its adherence to the original material and was later enhanced and condensed into the 13-episode anime series found on the Memorial Edition Blu-ray. Although the adaptation’s blend of traditional 2D and 3D CG animation received mixed reviews from fans and critics, both the film trilogy and the OVA were generally well-received. The new Blu-ray edition is an excellent opportunity to dive into one of the most acclaimed arcs in the genre.

For those who prefer not to wait for the Steelbook edition, the standard Blu-ray version of Berserk: The Golden Age – Memorial Edition is available for $42.14 on Amazon. It includes all the content of the Steelbook edition in simpler packaging.

Additional Berserk anime adaptations are also accessible on Blu-ray. This includes the 2016 sequel series that continues from where Berserk: The Golden Age left off. Despite criticism for its rigid CG animation, it provides a worthwhile continuation of the story for those who prefer anime to manga. This series is available in the Berserk (2016): The Complete Series Blu-ray set, currently priced at $41 on Amazon, down from $70.

For a different perspective on The Golden Age arc, the cult-classic 1997 Berserk anime series is also available. Offered in a Blu-ray box set for $36 (originally $60) at Amazon, it varies in certain aspects from the manga but captures the grim fantasy ambiance perfectly. Its hand-drawn animation still impresses nearly three decades later.
