Uzumaki Anime Limited Edition Steelbook Is Up For Preorder

For many years, Junji Ito has set the benchmark in the horror manga domain, often likened to the Stephen King of manga. This celebrated Japanese artist is known for his chilling narratives and strikingly gruesome illustrations. Excitingly, the anime adaptation of his iconic Uzumaki series will be available on Blu-ray starting September 9, offered in two different versions including a Limited Edition Steelbook as depicted below.

The Limited Edition is priced at $35 and is presented in a captivating steelbook case that beautifully encapsulates Ito’s artwork and the eerie essence of spirals. Additionally, there is a Standard Edition Blu-ray available for $20.

If you are unfamiliar with the original manga, Uzumaki is a globally acclaimed horror saga set in a peculiar town overtaken by spirals, causing the town’s residents to spiral into madness. The story centers on Saito and Goshima, who are desperately trying to escape the insanity that distorts both the physical and mental state of its victims. The anime version was initially announced in 2019 but faced multiple delays before finally airing in late 2024.

The adaptation’s delays were mainly due to the production studio’s efforts to meticulously translate Ito’s detailed artwork into animation. Unfortunately, the series received mixed reviews, particularly noting a decline in quality after a promising first episode. This perhaps underscores the challenge and horror of adapting beloved manga for television.

For fans of Junji Ito’s work, there is also the Junji Ito Collection: The Complete Series available on Blu-ray. This set includes 24 episodes based on his Masterpiece Collection, Fragments of Horror, and Shiver.

Exploring Junji Ito’s Manga

While the Uzumaki anime serves as a significant nod to the manga, enthusiasts might prefer the original manga, which is considered superior. The complete Uzumaki saga is available in a deluxe hardcover edition on Amazon for a discounted price of $20, originally $35. This edition compiles 648 pages of Ito’s pioneering horror.

Other manga series by Ito also feature budget-friendly deluxe editions. For instance, the Tomie omnibus, spanning 752 pages, is priced at $19 (originally $25). Tomie is a collection of tales about a bewitchingly beautiful woman whose allure drives men to commit murder. Another notable work, Gyo, available in a 2-in-1 Deluxe Edition, presents a gripping narrative of sea monsters and other anomalies.

Several of Ito’s upcoming story collections are available for pre-order on Amazon. Moan, releasing in October, offers six stories across 272 pages in hardcover format. In March 2026, Ito’s collection titled Statues will be released, featuring ten stories across 328 pages, ranging from unsettling tales of headless statues to mysterious diseases enhancing beauty before causing death.

More of Junji Ito’s manga, including some written and illustrated by him and others illustrated by him with different writers, are listed below. Additionally, there are Junji Ito adult coloring books, including one based on Uzumaki and another releasing in August. For insights into how Ito crafts his iconic manga, his memoir Uncanny: The Origins of Fear, published last fall, is worth checking out.
