Civilization 7 Outlines Crucial 1.1.1 Update as It Struggles to Compete on Steam Against Civ 6 and Even the 15-Year-Old Civ 5

Firaxis, the developer behind Civilization 7, recently detailed the important 1.1.1 update for the game. This update arrives as the game experiences lower player numbers on Steam compared to its predecessors, Civilization 6 and the 15-year-old Civilization 5.

On Steam, Civilization 7’s highest number of concurrent players in the last 24 hours was 16,921, which doesn’t place it within the top 100 most-played games on the platform. In comparison, Civilization 5, which was released in 2010, recorded a peak of 17,423 players, while Civilization 6 from 2016 reached 40,676 players in the same time frame.

Firaxis announced several “additions and refinements” that will be included in Update 1.1.1 on Steam. These enhancements include:

  • Quick Move Functionality
  • New Natural Wonder: Mount Everest
  • Further UI Enhancements & Polish
  • Options to Rename Settlements & Commanders
  • And additional features!

In a detailed video, Ed Beach, the lead designer, explained the update while referencing the complete patch notes, which are outlined below. The update will also be available for Nintendo Switch, though it will be released after March 25, according to Firaxis.

The Quick Move setting is now optional and can be activated in the game’s settings menu. This feature allows units to reach their destinations instantly, speeding up gameplay.

A significant change has been made to the starting position options in map generation. The new default setting for single-player games is ‘Standard,’ which creates a more varied and unpredictable continent layout similar to Civilization 6. The ‘Balanced’ setting remains for multiplayer games to ensure all players have equal opportunities on consistent maps.

Players can now rename their settlements and commanders, disregarding historical accuracy. Additionally, you can restart the game with a simple button click to achieve an ideal first settlement location, mimicking a feature from Civ 6 that regenerates the map using new seeds while keeping your selected leader and civilization.

The update also brings numerous UI improvements such as persistent city and town panels during purchases, attack notifications for cities, new crisis indicators, and enhanced resource tooltips. Significant pacing adjustments have also been made.

Furthermore, new civilizations including Bulgaria and Nepal, along with new leader Simón Bolívar, are introduced in the “Crossroads of the World Collection,” which goes live today, March 25.
