DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has recently clarified speculations regarding the appearance of Robin in the upcoming film “The Batman 2.” This comes after the screenplay was submitted by writers Matt Reeves and Mattson Tomlin.
Speculation around Robin’s inclusion in the sequel, which stars Robert Pattinson, began after journalist Jeff Sneider reported on details from the script. Sneider suggested that the story might feature Robin in some capacity. However, the darker tone set by Reeves and Tomlin in their portrayal of Gotham had already made fans skeptical about how Robin’s character would be integrated.
In a recent post on Threads, Gunn outright dismissed these rumors as baseless. He emphasized that very few people have had access to the script, stating, “Guys please stop believing this nonsense. I think six of us have read the script. No one knows anything about The Batman 2.”
Matt Reeves, who is also directing the sequel, submitted the script on June 27, 2025—almost three years after the first film premiered. Given the secretive nature of such a high-profile project and the fact that it was only turned in about a month ago, it’s understandable that details are being closely guarded. The production team aims to start shooting in the spring of 2026.
Warning! Spoilers for Superman (2025) follow.
James Gunn has a history of addressing rumors about DC films on social media, even when some of those rumors later turned out to be partly true. In April 2024, he responded to speculation that his then-upcoming movie “Superman” would feature a clone of the titular character. At that time, he confirmed the plot would focus on a confrontation between David Corenswet’s Superman and Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor, dismissing other rumors as unfounded.
Despite originating from different sources, viewers who saw “Superman” since its release last month encountered Ultraman, a clone of Superman created by Lex Luthor. While a Robin appearance in “The Batman 2” might seem unlikely in comparison to the Ultraman storyline, Gunn’s denial suggests he prefers to keep plot details under wraps until the narrative is more concrete.
After several postponements, “The Batman 2” is now set to hit theaters on October 1, 2027. The DC Universe is also developing “Batman: The Brave and the Bold,” which will include Damian Wayne—known as Bruce Wayne’s son and one of the many characters to take up the Robin mantle. With multiple interpretations of Batman in development, Gunn has expressed that managing these overlapping storylines has become a significant challenge, even calling Batman his “biggest issue in all of DC.”
As we anticipate further updates on DC’s expansive slate, insights can also be gleaned from recent statements by Colin Farrell about “The Batman 2” and potential future installments. Meanwhile, fans can explore the full range of upcoming DC movies and TV shows, especially with the release of “Superman.”
