Across the world awareness for DJ performances has been increasing with time. What started as a cultural movement on a niche scale is now finally taking over more cities with each passing day. And, Chicago is the latest in the list to recognise DJ performances as an art form. Before this, we also learned about Berlin which declared techno parties as high culture.
This effectively exempts venues which exclusively put on electronic or hip-hop shows from having to pay the additional three percent amusement tax that the city was attempting to levy. Joe Shanahan, the owner behind popular Chicago venues like Metro and Smart Bar, commented on the new amendment saying:
“This agreement confirms that government officials should not be the arbiters of what constitutes art while affording small venue owners a sense of certainty as they continue to present musical talent to Chicagoans and the many visitors who flock to our venues based on our city’s international reputation as a music capital.”
The amendment for the Amusement Tax is set on October 26, 2016.
