Global Citizen Festival fever officially took over India when legendary UK band Coldplay announced their highly awaited arrival to the subcontinent alongside the likes of Jay Z and more for the massive charity event. While the festival is slated to take place at MMRDA Grounds on November 19, it now seems that fresh political controversy has cropped up which might even lead to the postponement of the event.
As reported by Hindustan Times, The Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) have demanded that the event should be postponed as it violates the election code of conduct for the upcoming municipal council polls. Moreover, the report suggests that the state government is the strategic partner for the show and likely plans to influence voters in order for next year’s BMC polls.
Speaking of the whole issue, Sanjay Nirupam, Mumbai chief of Congress said:
“The Maharasthra government has invested in the event [organised by Global Citizen India]. The MMRDA headed by the chief minister Fadnavis has given a concession of 75% in fare to the organisers for the ground at BKC. The government has also given tax exemption to the show. The tax exemption was given when the code of conduct was in force,”
Stay tuned for more updates and keep your fingers crossed!
