In what could turn out to be a big blow to Soundcloud, music streaming giants Spotify and Apple Music are all set to feature unofficial content on their platforms, all thanks to their partnership with Dubset.
Featuring unofficial music is one of Soundcloud’s prime feature, which has lead millions of users to discover new music and talent, while giving upcoming artists a platform to showcase their talent to a wide audience. However, Apple Music and Spotify’s deal with Dubset, a music rights management service, in March and May respectively has paid off, as the first unofficial remix saw its initial stream today, with DJ Jazzy Jeff‘s remix of Anderson .Paak. being the first one, with more music to follow.
The whole process of featuring unofficial remixes on the streaming services works with Dubset scanning an entire mix and matching it to existing samples, and then allocating the royalties so everyone is compensated equally. Dubset‘s CEO Stephen White has also confirmed that multi-song sets uploaded by DJs are also coming next, with only Above & Beyond’s ABGT200 set available on Spotify as of now.
Now what remains to be seen is how this entire move will have an impact on Soundcloud, as Spotify is already in talks to acquire the audio platform.
