R.F. Kuang, celebrated for her Nebula Award-winning work, debuts a new fantasy book this week. Titled Katabasis, the 560-page book combines elements reminiscent of Dante’s Inferno and Susanna Clarke’s Piranesi, setting its story within a mystical academic setting and the netherworld. The much-awaited book is set to be released on August 26 as a standalone novel and will be available in a stunning collectible hardcover edition by Harper Voyager. The Katabasis Deluxe Limited Edition is being sold for $24.48 (originally $35) at both Amazon and Walmart.

Once the initial run of Katabasis is sold out, only the standard edition will be available, lacking the special features such as the attractive sprayed edges, the ornate case, and the illustrated endpapers. Given that Amazon has already listed the standard edition for just two dollars less, it suggests that the Deluxe Limited Edition may soon be out of stock.

Despite her young age of 29, Kuang has already established herself as a prolific and acclaimed author. Her debut novel, The Poppy War, launched her career when she was just 22 and was signed at age 20. The series, which is a grimdark historical fantasy set in a world inspired by her native China, has been followed by successful sequels and is available in various formats, including a cost-effective paperback box set.

Last November, Harper released The Poppy War Deluxe Collector’s Edition featuring deluxe enhancements such as sprayed edges and illustrated endpapers.
