Craig Mazin Reflects on The Last of Us’ Most Heart-Wrenching Episode
The showrunner of The Last of Us, Craig Mazin, recently opened up about the emotionally charged content of the series’ latest episode, which premiered on HBO on May 18. Please be aware that this article contains significant spoilers.
In episode 6, set in a flashback, there is a poignant moment where Ellie, portrayed by Bella Ramsey, confronts Joel, played by Pedro Pascal, on a porch. During this intense exchange, Ellie demands Joel to confirm her suspicions about the events that occurred in Salt Lake City.
Ellie questions Joel about his actions at the hospital, specifically about him killing many people, including Marlene, and whether the doctors could have developed a cure for the fungal infection. Joel admits to all this, tears visibly running down his face, leaving Ellie profoundly distressed. She expresses that sacrificing her life for a cure would have provided her existence with purpose.
“That was an interesting scene because there was one magical take where we just let them fully embrace their emotions,” Mazin shared with Collider. “Usually, in such scenes, you might hold actors back to keep the performance subdued. However, Bella and Pedro naturally underplay in a very genuine, subtle way. It’s uncommon for them to intensify their performance, so this was the moment to let them. If it was too much, it was too much. But it was incredibly moving for all of us on set.”
The Challenges of Filming Such Intense Emotions
Shooting this scene was particularly demanding, according to Mazin, not only because of the scene’s nature but also because Ramsey and Pascal share a close friendship and are highly supportive of each other.
“There’s a lot of emotionally taxing work in our show, but it really boils down to the extensive days and time spent together. They’ve grown to depend on and deeply care for one another. When you sense a farewell looming, it really starts to affect you deeply,” Mazin explained.
According to Mazin, a show like The Last of Us, where two characters share such a profound connection, is rare. He noted that this unique bond was palpable on the set.
“Experiences like this don’t come often. Sometimes it happens in your 40s, sometimes as a teenager. It’s unpredictable. But for both of them, they’ve experienced this intense cultural moment through the show, and it was something you could genuinely feel,” he said.
Looking Ahead: The Future of The Last of Us
The second season of The Last of Us is set to conclude on Sunday, May 25. With a third season already confirmed, Mazin revealed in the interview with Collider that a fourth season would be necessary to bring the series to a proper conclusion.
