TLOU Episode 6 Takes Us Back To What Broke Joel And Ellie's Relationship

Approaching the Conclusion of HBO’s The Last of Us Season 2

As we near the end of the second season of HBO’s adaptation of “The Last of Us,” fans are eager yet saddened that only two episodes remain. With Season 3 already confirmed, speculation about the season’s conclusion is rampant. An intriguing sneak peek of Episode 6 reveals a timeline shift to two years prior, providing insights into the events that drove a wedge between Joel and Ellie.

Warning: This summary includes spoilers from Season 2 of The Last of Us.

In the climax of the latest episode, Ellie, played by Bella Ramsey, encounters Nora (Tati Gabrielle), a member of the WLF present during Abby’s (Kaitlyn Dever) fatal confrontation with Joel (Pedro Pascal). Ellie demands information about Abby’s location, echoing a tense choice from the original video game, where she offers Nora a swift end or prolonged suffering.

During their confrontation, Nora recognizes Ellie as the immune girl mentioned in the research notes of Abby’s father. She attempts to convince Ellie that Joel’s decision to save her was destructive, to which Ellie simply responds, “I know.” The episode concludes with Ellie in her room, shortly greeted by Joel, who warmly addresses her as his daughter.

The upcoming episode’s trailer teases a poignant scene from the game—Ellie’s birthday—paired with her grappling with the truth about the hospital incident.

The birthday sequence, lasting around 30 minutes in the game, is a touching moment of connection between Joel and Ellie that transcends their usual survival struggles. With Episode 6 also addressing Ellie’s discovery of the truth, it will be interesting to see how these scenes are interwoven to advance the narrative effectively.

Game enthusiasts might also spot a hint in the trailer’s conclusion, where Ellie and Joel are seen armed with what seem to be sniper rifles, potentially setting the stage for another significant game event.

New episodes of The Last of Us are broadcast on Sundays at 6 PM PT / 9 PM ET on HBO and Max.
