Season 2 Finale of The Last of Us Sets a Grim Tone
The conclusion of “The Last of Us Season 2” left audiences in a dark place, reminiscent of the experiences felt by players of “The Last of Us Part II.” According to showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, significant changes are in store for the upcoming season, with some beloved characters potentially appearing less frequently when the show resumes.

Throughout Season 2, Ellie, portrayed by Bella Ramsey, was on a quest to avenge Joel’s (Pedro Pascal) death, leading her to hunt down Abby (Kaitlyn Dever). However, the season ended with Abby gaining the upper hand and shooting at Ellie, right before the scene switched to Abby’s initial day in Seattle. This pivotal moment mirrors a similar narrative shift in “The Last of Us Part II,” where Abby becomes the central character. As Season 3 will delve deeper into Abby’s narrative, it may limit the screen time for Ramsey and other returning actors. Nevertheless, Mazin has reassured fans that their favorite characters will return.
“All I can say is we haven’t seen the last of Kaitlyn Dever, Bella Ramsey, Isabela Merced, and many others who currently appear deceased in the storyline,” Mazin stated in an interview with Variety.
“Whether they appear on screen or not, their influence will be felt throughout the season,” Druckmann added.
Exploring New Depths in Season 3
Mazin further hinted that the upcoming season will explore the backstory of the Seraphites, unveil the identity of their prophet, and explain the origins of their conflict with the WLF. He also mentioned that the motives behind Isaac’s (Jeffrey Wright) actions will be clarified and that the backstory to the explosion in the seventh episode of Season 2 will be revealed.
In an HBO feature titled “Inside Episode 7,” Mazin shared that Season 3 will continue the narrative technique seen in “The Last of Us Part II,” providing viewers with Abby’s perspective to foster a deeper understanding and empathy for her journey.
“In Hollywood, we often encounter narratives strictly divided into heroes and villains,” Mazin explained. “What we aim to do with ‘The Last of Us’ is to craft stories about people. In this narrative, everyone, regardless of their side, has valid reasons for their deep-seated anger towards others. This anger manifests as violence, revenge, and deceit. The crucial questions we explore are about the resolution of these conflicts—can they be resolved, and if so, how?”
As of now, HBO has not announced the release date for Season 3 of “The Last of Us.”
