The Division 2 Brought Back the Series' Original Creative Director for Its New Survivors Extraction Experience

Ubisoft is actively updating Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 and has recently announced a new addition called Survivors, a survival extraction mode.

During a gamescom 2025 panel stream and a blog post on their official site, the development team discussed their strategy to continue enhancing the game for at least another year. They shared a content roadmap for the upcoming months, ensuring ongoing communication with the community about the development progress.

A key highlight of this announcement is The Division 2: Survivors. Described by Ubisoft as “a fresh take on the survival extraction gameplay,” this feature is still in its initial phases of creation. Magnus Jansén, who is returning as the creative director for Survivors after working on the original The Division, shared his enthusiasm during the gamescom discussion, expressing excitement over his return to the franchise and the new project.

…perhaps a clue to the most significant new element we’re introducing can be found in the name itself.

“

“As many of you have guessed, we are bringing a cold-weather, survival extraction mode to The Division 2,” Jansén revealed. “Fans of the original game’s survival mode, like myself, will find this new version especially thrilling, though it’s more than just a simple remake. We are incorporating some innovative elements into it.”

Jansén acknowledged that details are sparse since the project is in early development, but he teased, “What I can hint at is that the most significant aspect of what we’re doing may just be suggested by the name itself.”

“I’ll leave you with that thought, and I will return next year with more,” he concluded.

It will be a few months before we get a first glimpse of The Division 2: Survivors. Its release is tentatively scheduled for no earlier than late 2026, as indicated by its “TBA” status on the roadmap. Meanwhile, Ubisoft has tantalized fans with some initial concept art, hinting at potential scenarios that could feature in Survivors upon its release.

“The Division 2: Survivors is as much a project of the community as it is ours, and we’re committed to transparent development,” stated Julian Gerighty, the executive producer. “We emphasize clear communication and community engagement as we develop this new addition, and we look forward to your involvement as the project progresses.”

The Division Resurgence

An update on Ubisoft’s upcoming free-to-play mobile RPG MMO, The Division Resurgence, was also shared at today’s gamescom. Closed testing phases for both iOS and Android users are set to begin in September, and Ubisoft encourages interested participants to sign up here.

“The Division Resurgence brings players back to Manhattan several months after the events of Division 1,” the game’s description states. “The familiar terrain has been updated to reflect the passage of time, and this mobile spinoff aims to bridge the narrative gap between Division 1 and Division 2, enriching the lore with new storyline developments over time.”

Ubisoft is inviting players to join its Elite Task Force program to provide more direct feedback, describing it as a chance for dedicated players to closely collaborate with the development team and influence the future of the Division series.

The Division 2’s next season, titled The Pact, is scheduled to launch on September 9, 2025. As anticipation builds for Survivors, Resurgence, and other updates, fans can revisit our original The Division 2 review from 2019, which scored an 8.5/10.
