South Park Creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone Slam Paramount and Skydance Merger For 'F—king Up' Their Show

South Park Creators Express Frustration Over Delayed Season Premiere

Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creative minds behind “South Park,” have openly expressed their dissatisfaction with Paramount’s recent decision to postpone the debut of the show’s 27th season by two weeks. The delay is attributed to the ongoing merger between Paramount and Skydance, which Parker and Stone claim is adversely affecting their production. They voiced their discontent through the show’s official social media channels shortly after the announcement.

The statement from Parker and Stone came swiftly, just 30 minutes following Comedy Central’s official press release which shifted the premiere date. They stated, “This merger is a mess and it’s screwing up South Park. We are currently in the studio working on new episodes and we hope that the fans will be able to watch them somehow.”

Impact of the Paramount and Skydance Merger

Although the specifics of how the merger is impacting the show were not detailed by Parker and Stone, it is evident that the restructuring at Paramount (owner of Comedy Central, which airs South Park) has led to other disruptions as well, including additional premiere delays, significant layoffs, and outright cancellations of other productions.

The merger deal with Skydance is still pending, with a deadline set for July 7. It’s a tense wait as the FCC has yet to give its approval nearly a year after the merger was first announced.

Complications Over Streaming Rights

Compounding the frustrations are ongoing legal issues concerning the streaming rights of “South Park.” Previously, HBO Max held exclusive streaming rights until their agreement expired in June, leaving the future accessibility of the episodes uncertain. Paramount is currently in negotiations with Warner Bros. Discovery to finalize a new streaming deal. However, according to reports from Variety, the negotiations have been complicated by Jeff Shell, the upcoming president of Paramount, who allegedly has been interfering in discussions with both Warner Bros. Discovery and Netflix.

New Premiere Date Set

Despite these challenges, the new premiere date for Season 27 of “South Park” has been rescheduled to air on July 23 on Comedy Central, instead of the initially planned July 9. Fans of the series are hopeful that despite the behind-the-scenes turmoil, the quality and timeliness of the show’s production will not be compromised.
