Dying Light: Retouched Update Enhances Audio and Visuals This Week as Thousands Continue Playing the 10-Year-Old Zombie Game

Techland is revisiting the city of Harran, a decade after the original release, with an unexpected free update for Dying Light, dubbed the Retouched update.

The essence of the Retouched Update is to enhance the Dying Light experience you know and love.

For enthusiasts of the original Dying Light, this is an exhilarating period, though Techland clarifies that Retouched is not a remaster. According to franchise director Tymon Smektała, this update focuses on refining the existing game without changing its system requirements.

“The morning after the update was announced, I was quite nervous. Many expected it to be a comprehensive remaster,” Smektała noted in a new blog post. “To clarify, the Retouched Update aims to enhance what you already appreciate about Dying Light. It’s not about complete transformation or remastering.”

Among the visual improvements, players will see upgraded textures, lighting, and shadows. You might observe enhanced details in a wooden fence or more realistic reflections on metal surfaces. Techland is particularly proud of the updated appearances of some floors and concrete walls in Dying Light: Retouched, showcasing stone paths that now exhibit increased depth.

On the audio front, original Dying Light composer Paweł Blaszczak has returned to remaster the soundtrack. The entire soundtrack has been re-recorded on tape for the Retouched update, incorporating new tracks and remastered ambient sounds and hit reaction sounds, all debuting this week.

“Many of you have been curious over the past few months about the Retouched Update — its whereabouts, and the reason for its delay,” the post added. “The truth is, we were dealing with technology over a decade old. Despite our accumulated experience, adapting those insights to the original Dying Light engine while maintaining stability was a real challenge.”

The Dying Light: Retouched update is more about Techland offering a refreshing surprise for a game that has remarkably withstood the test of time rather than reviving a forgotten classic. Despite a peak player count of just 45,876 as per SteamDB, the original Dying Light has maintained a consistent player base of around 12,000 over the past year. These figures are impressive for a predominantly single-player zombie game, particularly in light of Dying Light 2: Stay Human, launched three years ago, which often struggles to reach 10,000 players.

The saga of the original Dying Light will continue with the upcoming release of Dying Light: The Beast, which has recently secured a launch date of August 22, 2025, available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S. It will follow the original hero, Kyle Crane, in a brand-new storyline. Check out our preview to see early impressions.
