New Cast Member Joins Upcoming Resident Evil Film
The latest installment in the Resident Evil film series, directed by Zach Cregger of Barbarian and Weapons fame, is set to feature Paul Walter Hauser, as recently reported. Hauser is set to star alongside Austin Abrams, who also appeared in Weapons, in this new chapter of the Resident Evil franchise. The news of Hauser’s participation was first broken by Deadline.
Paul Walter Hauser is an experienced actor recognized for his role in The Luckiest Man in America, a film that detailed Michael Larson’s remarkable winnings on the 1980s game show Press Your Luck. Hauser has also been prominent in the 2019 Clint Eastwood-directed film Richard Jewell, and has had roles in Cobra Kai, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, The Naked Gun, and I, Tonya.
Production Details and Film Ambiance
Shooting for the Resident Evil film is scheduled to start this October in Prague, which suggests that more details about the cast will likely emerge soon. This new movie will not revisit any previous game storylines, but according to Cregger, who co-authored the screenplay with Shay Hatten and is also the director, the film is set in the universe of Resident Evil 2 and 3. However, it will primarily capture the atmosphere of Resident Evil 4.
Cregger expressed his enthusiasm about the project, stating, “I’ve never seen a movie like it. I am beyond excited making this.”
Director’s Fresh Perspective on Resident Evil
Although Paul W.S. Anderson previously directed six Resident Evil films, Cregger admitted to not having seen any of them. He mentioned that fans of Anderson’s adaptations might find his take on the series quite different. Sony Pictures, which distributed the earlier Resident Evil movies accumulating over $1 billion in revenue, will also distribute Cregger’s film.
The anticipated release date for this new Resident Evil movie is September 18, 2026. Additionally, Sony Pictures is handling the distribution of the upcoming live-action Zelda movie, set to premiere in May 2027.
