Resident Evil Movie Director Says He's Expecting "Online Hate," And Here's Why

A Fresh Take on Resident Evil by Director Zach Cregger

Zach Cregger, the director of the eagerly anticipated Resident Evil film, recently shared his unique vision for the project. In a new issue of SFX magazine, reported by GamesRadar, Cregger expressed his intention to diverge somewhat from the original game series, acknowledging that this might not sit well with all fans.

While Cregger is committed to respecting the established universe of the game, he clarified that his adaptation would not strictly adhere to all the game’s lore. He stopped short of detailing the exact changes he plans to implement but emphasized his desire to avoid altering any fundamental aspects of the beloved franchise.

Cregger also revealed his deep appreciation for the Resident Evil game series, mentioning that he has played every installment, with a particular affection for Resident Evil 4—a game he has experienced countless times.

Rather than strictly following the game’s storyline, Cregger aims to craft a film that captures the genuine essence and atmosphere of the gameplay experience. He hopes this approach will resonate with both fans of the series and new audiences.

Addressing Potential Fan Reactions

Understanding the passionate fan base of the Resident Evil series, Cregger is prepared for a range of reactions, including criticism. He mentioned, “No matter what I do, people are going to come for me online.” Despite this, his primary focus is to create a film that he believes in, one that delivers a compelling story. Cregger remains hopeful that the final product will not only satisfy him but also appeal to the broader audience.

Following his success with the 2022 horror hit Barbarian, which stemmed from his original concept, Cregger is not new to the cinematic world. He is set to continue his directorial ventures with another original film, Weapons, featuring stars like Julia Garner and Josh Brolin, set for release in August. The upcoming Resident Evil project marks his first foray into adapting a major franchise.

Prior to Barbarian, Cregger was involved in filmmaking with Miss March, a sex comedy from 2009 that he directed alongside Trevor Moore, his late colleague from the comedy troupe Whitest Kids U’ Know. Although not as well-received, it forms a part of his diverse directorial portfolio.

Updates on the Resident Evil Gaming Franchise

The Resident Evil game universe continues to expand, with the announcement of Resident Evil: Requiem slated for release in February 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC platforms. Additionally, a new mobile game, Resident Evil Survival Unit, is currently under development.
