George Romero's Resident Evil Movie Doc Is Now Free To Watch

Brandon Salisbury’s Documentary Unveils George Romero’s Unmade Resident Evil Film

Brandon Salisbury’s documentary, titled “George Romero’s Resident Evil,” premiered on various digital platforms earlier this year. This film delves into Romero’s initial association with the Resident Evil series and discusses his unproduced movie adaptation. Currently, “George Romero’s Resident Evil” is available for free viewing on YouTube, providing an extensive retrospective on the project that never came to fruition.

The documentary highlights how Romero’s seminal work, “Night of the Living Dead” and its sequels, significantly influenced the Capcom’s Resident Evil series. It features an intriguing segment about Romero directing a commercial for “Resident Evil 2,” which was originally intended for the Japanese market only. The documentary shares amusing behind-the-scenes stories from the commercial’s production, including Romero directing in shorts and flip-flops in the chilly California weather, and his astonishment at the budget, which was the highest he had ever experienced on a per-second basis.

Romero’s enthusiasm for directing a feature-length Resident Evil movie did not go unnoticed, and he was eventually tasked with both writing and directing the film. He brought on board Bernie Wrightson, a renowned horror comic book artist, to design the Tyrant creature. Although Romero’s screenplay deviated somewhat from the original game—portraying Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine as lovers—it remained more faithful to the game’s narrative than the version later directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, which was made without Romero’s involvement.

The documentary reveals that the collapse of Romero’s version of Resident Evil was largely due to a significant clash with producer Bernd Eichinger regarding the script’s level of gore and violence. Eichinger, who was opposed to the intense violent content typical of Romero’s earlier films, ultimately led to Romero being dropped from the project due to his refusal to water down his vision.

The Future of Resident Evil in Film and Games

Looking ahead, the Resident Evil film franchise is set to continue under the direction of Zach Cregger, known for his work on “Barbarian.” Cregger has described the upcoming movie as being “built in the spirit” of the original video games. This new installment is scheduled for a theatrical release in September 2026. Meanwhile, fans of the game series can look forward to “Resident Evil Requiem,” the next entry in the video game series, which is set to be released on February 27, 2026.
